4 Things Teens Need to Consider Before Dating Someone Older

In today's world, children are developing earlier than they did in past generations. Girls, who are only eleven or twelve years old, often look like they are sixteen years old. As a result, if you are one of the faster-developing girls, this can sometimes attract attention from those older than you.

At first glance, you may find this complementary, but there are a lot of things to consider before dating someone older than you.

1. Your body's appearance is ahead of your brain's development

Although your body may resemble an adult's, your brain will not resemble an adult's brain until you are in your early twenties.

The parts of your brain that control your impulses and ability to plan ahead, are the last things to develop.

You can see how this could cause a potentially problematic situation if you are alone in a room with a date who is older than you and expecting more from you physically than you had imagined.

2. Your maturity levels do not match

A good rule of thumb is not to date someone who is more than a year older than you, when you are still in your teen years.

This ensures that your maturity levels are closer to the same levels. Of course, this does not hold true in all circumstances, but the more years between you and someone you are dating, the greater the likelihood that your maturity levels will not match.

3. Sexual readiness may not be the same

If you are dating someone older than you, that age gap can become evident when it comes to determining your readiness to engage in heavy petting and sexual encounters of various kinds.

It is possible that your date has already gone all the way, and expects it from you too.

You have to be prepared for this, and be confident in your skills to say, "no," if you are not comfortable with a situation.

You also have to trust that the individual you are with, will not try to take advantage of you, resulting in you not being able to make a choice.

4. Exposure to drugs and alcohol

Dating someone years older than you, as a teen, also increases the chances of exposure to drugs and alcohol.

It would be naïve to say that younger teens do not know how to get their hands on these items, but if you are hanging with people who are older than you, then you are more likely to come in contact with drugs and alcohol if you are attending house parties or social events with your date.

In conclusion, when you are a teen, a couple years difference in age between you and a date are substantial when it comes to maturity levels, and experience.

Before dating someone older than you, be sure you understand this to lessen the chances of putting yourself in a compromising situation.
