A Zombie Costume Is the Perfect Last Minute Halloween Costume

Have you ever been stuck at the last minute without a Halloween costume? It's happened to me. The holiday doesn't move around, but I still sometimes manage to forget it!

It's okay though: if you're like me, you have a dozen outfits in your closet that only take a little work to turn into costumes.

The easiest costume you can make is a ghoul costume or a zombie costume.

If you watch any zombie movie, you'll see a lot of occupational zombies, like a nurse zombie, construction worker zombie and so on. Dawn of the Dead is full of these.

The laziest way to do this costume is to take your regular day job and just be a zombie version of that. Zombie teacher, zombie barista, zombie insurance claims adjuster. The sky is the limit.

The best part is that you don't have to buy a costume, just raid your closet.

So what if you work from home and your daily uniform is pajama pants and a t-shirt?

You're in luck: zombie movies are full of regular people who just happened to become the undead.

Get some clothes you'll never wear again (this is a great way to get rid of old clothing you hate) and get them nice and dirty.

Drive over them, smear them with fake blood or get the edges all ragged.

If you don't have anything in your closet that you'll never wear again, hit up your local thrift store.

You can easily spend less than $5 on the most hideous zombie outfit that you'll never wear again and be the hit of the party.

The most identifiable part of the ghoul/zombie costume is your skin.

It should look dead and necrotic.

Your best bet for this is hitting up a dollar store or costume shop during Halloween season.

Depending on your natural skin tone you can go with a blueish white or greenish white for maximum effect.

Don't spend too much on makeup, you should be able to do a decent job for less than $10.

Put on the makeup, put on the clothes. Something's missing.

What do zombies do? They eat people.

You should be bloody. A small bottle of fake blood can be found at the dollar store in the right season and at a costume or theater shop when not.

Smear fake blood around your mouth, in your hair, on your clothes, and on your date for maximum effect.

Consider the movie Carrie as inspiration. And with that, you're almost set.

If you already own props like fake body parts or organs, this is the time of year to bring them out. (And then consider the life choices that led to you owning fake organs.)

If you eat meat, chewing on beef jerky at the right moment could be hilarious. It's your attitude that will sell the costume.

Do all this while wearing your ghoul costume and you're guaranteed a scary and happy Halloween.
