Acne Scars - Why You Scar & Prevention Methods Explained

Acne scars can be one of the most devastating consequences of acne.

Not only do we need to consider the scars once they have developed, but also what causes them and how we can prevent them from happening in the first place.

How do acne scars develop?

When there is inflammation inside the pores of your skin (where your oil glands and hair follicles are located), your skin responds by repairing the damage.

Your body then lays down connective tissue in an attempt to fix the damage to the skin.

Unfortunately, your body is only concerned with ensuring the inflammatory site gets repaired; it does not consider the final aesthetic appearance.

What are factors that affect whether you develop acne scars?

Severity and type of acne you have -

If you have uncomplicated acne with smaller pimples that respond well to over-the-counter treatment options, you are less likely to develop scars.

However, some people who have acne that is more severe, experience nodules and cysts, which is more likely to result in scarring.

Nodules feel like hard, sore lumps below the surface of your skin.

Cysts, whereas, feel more like they are filled with fluid, are soft, and can also be sore.

Genetics -

Your genes play an important role in determining whether you are prone to developing acne, its severity, and the likelihood of scarring.

What are some ways to reduce the chances of acne scarring?

For more uncomplicated forms of acne, it may be enough to treat your skin with skin cleansers that contain bezoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.

However, in the case of severe acne that is not responding to simple hygiene procedures, you should seek the help of a licensed dermatologist who can prescribe appropriate treatments for your individual case.

This may include antibiotics, other medications, or stronger topical medications.

Hopefully, by seeking treatment early on, you can lessen the chances of scarring.

Otherwise, if you do develop scars, then you have to look at other options of lessening the appearance of those scars such as microdermabrasion and other methods that dermatologists use.

Avoid squeezing pimples. This can aggravate the surrounding skin and introduce more bacteria into the site.

In summary, it is important to recognize why scars develop, and what increases the chances of developing those scars.

By having this knowledge, you can then make appropriate decisions that can affect the overall appearance of your skin.
