Angeline Jolie Has Double Mastectomy to Reduce Chance of Cancer

Shock announcement made today, that will hopefully serve to help other women who are fighting cancer or taking preventative steps like Angeline Jolie just did in the past 3 months of surgery for a double mastectomy.

So much has been written about Angeline Jolie over the decades, from when she was a rebellious and rather outrageous personality who did everything she could to defy convention, right through to being a UN ambassador fighting for the rights of people in third world countries.

She has had a real transformation in the past 20+ years... and has finally earned some respect for her work and her ethics in recent years. She still has a lot of ground to cover though with the members of the Team Aniston that have problems with her stealing Brad from Jen, but that is old news now for the rest of the world.

It is sad that in her teens she would abuse her body with cutting it, to 'feel' alive from the pain she experienced. After her marriage to Billy Bob she adopted a young boy from Cambodia and from there began the development of her "rainbow family".

Now as a mother she has had do deal with the awful reality that she may die like her mother, leaving her kids at much too young an age, because of the cancer gene she also has, like her mother.

In a very courageous decision at the start of this year she underwent a double mastectomy, because as she said "I carry a “faulty” gene, BRCA1, which sharply increases my risk of developing breast cancer and ovarian cancer."

She goes on to explain that "On April 27, I finished the three months of medical procedures that the mastectomies involved."

Angeline made this announcement to the public in the NY Times and goes into descriptive detail about her process, including the pre-op preparation which was very painful but in her opinion this surgery has not affected her sense of femininity or beauty.

I have to salute a woman who has not had a simple or easy life, and yet who has made a point to stand up and be counted, making a difference in the world, starting at home and taking it out to Third World causes.

Doubtless everyone who reads her full story will be impressed by her staunchness and her determination to turn this dire situation into yet another opportunity to educate women around the world, and help women to make informed choices about their body by learning from her experiences.

I think it is extraordinary that Angeline and Brad could carry out this whole operation without a word leaking out anywhere to the media!

It just goes to show that the celebrities who claim to be hounded and unable to escape the media and paparazzi for even one day, just don't know how to do it.

The papers have still been full of her public appearances and her traveling with the kids, and attending international Conferences, smoothly continuing all her scheduled daily activities without a break, but not a whisper of the process she was enduring while all this was going on.

A very dignified way to deal with this ordeal. All our best wishes go to her for a full and speedy recovery from her procedures.

Let's hope that this drastic action has the desired results, and that Angeline & Brad's kids get to keep their mother for many decades more!
