Do You Try To Deal With Stress By Smoking?


They are huddled outside the office building or just leaving the mall…power smoking a cigarette. I know, because I used to be one of them.

Smoking 60 cigarettes a day made me think I was coping with stress better, and it was a distraction from the immediate stressor I was dealing with at that instant.

We all know people who smoke. Some smokers are in a group I like to call, “stress smokers.”

They are under the belief that when the stress becomes too much, puffing hard on a cigarette will take away the stress.

In reality, it is just occupying the space in their mind, where the stress was nagging away.

As soon as the cigarette is done, the stress comes back to mind.

While some people state they feel less stressed because they are smoking, the fact of the matter is this…it’s the clean air they are breathing in with the cigarette smoke, that is giving them short term relief.

Deep breathing of any kind, will produce positive results in your body chemistry.

Of course deep breathing cool clean air is much preferable to a bunch of tar.

Stress suffers may also take to drinking as a “way to forget” their stress.

True enough, if you are drunk, you are not likely to remember the ugly fight you had with the spouse or if you do remember, you just won’t give a crap.

However, once the drinking has ceased and the person has spent the night, sleeping it off…first thing in the morning, a little buzzer will go off in their heads.

“I have a problem,’ that computer between their ears will announce and off they go again, stressed out and looking for relief.

A double whammy if the person drinks to relieve stress and then fires up a smoke.

Now they have two bad habits hammering away on their physical body.

I want you to picture this scene. A man has a wife and he has a girlfriend on the side.

The girlfriend wants to be the “wife” and makes it known to the man…that she is about to do whatever is necessary-to be number one in his life.

So now the man carrying huge load of stress on his back, which feels like a gorilla that’s developed a fast food addiction.

Heavy shoulders and a load of guilt and fear to carry around. So in a way to deal with the stress, he heads off to the local bar and gets hammered.

Now let’s say he is lucky enough to come home while his wife is sound asleep but he in turn, sleeps through the alarm clock.

Now he is late for work and when he eventually arrives, his employer calls him in and hands out a written warning.

This man, has taken his stress and stacked it like a big pile of rocks. Everywhere he turns, he keeps getting slammed and so he repeats the process of over indulging in booze, night after night.

Now he’s got an upset wife, an angry girlfriend and a liver that wants a new clean body to reside in.

Can we all agree here, that this man needs to take care of his stress immediately and find some positive solutions to his problems?

Stress and the related issues like cancer from smoking or a liver that quits…can be avoided by taking the proper steps in the beginning.
