Housing a Pet Lizard

Lizards (iguanas, bearded dragons, chameleons, and leopard geckos) are not your typical pet in terms of maintenance. The initial cost might not set you back but they are high maintenance and potentially dangerous if proper care is ignored.

In captivity, lizards can live an average of 15 to 20 years and can reach the length of 5 to 7 feet.

So if you are planning to keep a lizard as a pet, space for it to grow and move around is very essential. In this regard we will discuss the right housing condition and cage requirements of pet lizards.

Cage- A tank or an aquarium is the most appropriate cage for lizards. It's size should depend on how large your pet is and how much it will grow. It's cage should be appropriate for your particular pet.

For tree dwellers, the cage's height should be longer than its length and width, whereas with ground dwellers, a larger floor area is necessary. The ideal cage should imitate the natural environment it had in the wild.

Temperature- Lizards are cold blooded and need a warm environment. Research on the heat requirement of the particular lizard you have and install necessary heating apparatus in, on top, or around the cage.

Usually, the heating system is composed of a UV light that is installed on top or around the cage (whichever is practical) and heating pads that are placed underneath the cage.

Humidity- The humidity of the cage depends on the type of lizard you have. Desert dwellers need a dry cage while tropical species need to live in an environment with higher humidity. Again, you need to do some research regarding this.

Lighting- There are some lizards that love burrowing underground. Most lizards, on the other hand, love the sun. But for the most part, lizards need a constant supply of sunlight.

Since it is dangerous and time consuming to bring your lizard outside the house for sunlight, you can provide artificial lighting right in the cage.

Space- Lizards are cute and small when young, but full grown iguanas can reach the length of 5 to 7 feet. They may not be as active as dogs or cats, but they require a lot of space inside and outside their cage to freely move around.

Some species of lizards do not grow that long and can be housed in small enclosures. Still, it is important to research space requirements for your pet lizard.
