What Is Acne?

What is acne?

Acne is the term that is used to define the variety of spots, pimples and blemishes that can occur on the face, chest, back and sometimes other parts of the body.

It is something that usually happens to a person when they hit puberty and will normally last until they get into their twenties.

However acne is not just the reserve of the young.

Older people can also suffer from this particular ailment.

What Is A Blackhead

A blackhead is the result of dead skin cells and the natural oil combined with oxygen in a blocked skin pore.

It is the oxygen that provides the substance with its colour.

This is able to occur because the pore has a tiny opening, allowing air to get in.

What Is A Whitehead

A whitehead is similar to a blackhead but there is no opening in the clogged pore.

This means that air can not get in so the colour remains a milky white substance.

What Is A Cyst

A cyst is the term used to describe the sort of acne that happens deeper under the skin.

It is a raised area or bump and will contain a collection of fluid or sometimes you will find a collection of pus. A cyst will also contain some air.

Depending on the severity of the case, some people will have painful cysts, while others will not.

Acne is a condition that can have a profound effect on a sufferer.

It can make a person feel insecure about their appearance and can be a trigger for unwanted attention.

This is particularly the case for young adolescence at school.

The initial way to treat acne is to try the various over the counter remedies available from a local pharmacy.

If the problem is more serious then it would be time to consult with a doctor to find out about alternative treatments.

What Causes Acne?

acne pimple skin blemish

The reason that spots appear on the face is due to the over production of oil from the natural oil glands in the skin.

This natural oil is used to keep the skin well lubricated and protected.

If too much is produced, it gets trapped and the build up is what forms the raised bumps that appear on the face.

The typical types of pimples that people can suffer from include blackheads, whiteheads and cysts.

Blackheads and whiteheads are quite similar.

The medical term for a blackhead is "comedo" and for a whitehead it is known as an "open comedo".

These types of pimples are caused by a blockage of bacteria, dead skin cells, keratin and sebum, which is the name of the natural oil that the skin produces.

It is quite normal to find these sorts of spots erupting from clogged hair follicles.

How to Reduce Skin Blemishes With Gentle Cleansing

Because acne is associated with oily skin, many people use harsh cleansers to try to dry out the oil.

In actuality, this does the opposite of what you want it to do.

When you over dry your skin, it actually stimulates it to produce more oil.

And as you develop dry skin, your skin begins to flake and the dead cells can actually become debris that clogs your pores even further.

This can actually make an acne problem worse.

That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t cleanse it – just that you should make sure to use the proper type of cleanser.

Look for cleansers that are free from alcohol which can dry the skin.

Look for cleansers that are free from sulfates and labeled alcohol-free.

These are going to be less harsh and keep you from developing flaky, dry skin.

You should also look fro cleansers labeled for sensitive skin that don’t contain harsh fragrances.

It’s important to wash away oils and dirt from the day, including makeup.

Make sure to cleanse your skin in the morning when you wake up and again before you go to bed.

Use a clean washcloth and make sure that you get all of your makeup removed.

Keep Skin Moist to Help Clear up Skin Blemishes

moisturise skin

Often people with oily skin or acne think that moisturizing your skin is going to make it worse.

However, with proper cleansing and the right moisturizer, your skin will actually benefit from adding it to your skin.

The key is to use moisturizers that are oil-free.

You need to keep your skin from drying out, but you don’t want to add products to your skin that will clog your pores and cause acne to develop.

When you don’t add moisture, your skin will produce even more oil to compensate and keep your skin from drying out.

However this type of moisture will cause acne to get worse.

When choosing moisturizer, look for one that’s formulated for sensitive skin and is labeled oil-free.

You’ll also want to look for moisturizers that are formulated for skin that’s blemish-prone.

You may find ingredients such as tea tree oil and salicylic acid in moisturizers made for people with acne.

These products help to fight the bacteria that causes clogged pores to develop inflammation the actual problem.

Resist the Urge to Pick at The Skin Blemishes

dont pick at skin blemishes

When you have acne, you may feel the urge to pick at your skin and this can actually cause even more problems.

Popping pimples can actually lead to infection and scarring.

Continuing to pick at skin can cause scabs that are unsightly and not easy to cover.

Scabs that are continually picked will lead to permanent scars and marks on your face.

It’s best to treat acne with specific products and then leave it alone.

Picking, squeezing, and digging into your skin can cause your skin to look even worse. It can also lead to infection.

It can be difficult to leave your skin alone when you have an unsightly pimple.

You may want to get rid of it immediately so no one will see it.

However, if you pick at your skin you can actually cause scars that will last much longer than the acne itself.

Patience will save you from having long-term problems that come from having blemishes that become scars.

Continue to treat spots that are troublesome, but don’t try to speed things along by squeezing and picking.

How to Get Clear Skin? Stay Hydrated

drink water to clear skin blemishes

Keeping your skin healthy begins on the inside.

Drinking plenty of water will help you to stay hydrated and cause your skin to become healthier.

For most people, eight to ten glasses of water are appropriate.

If you exercise a lot, you’ll need more water to stay hydrated and make up for the loss of sweat.

But how does drinking water help your skin to stay clear? There are a few ways it does this.

Water helps your body to get rid of toxins and reduces inflammation all over the body.

It also helps to keep your skin hydrated so it doesn’t overproduce oil that can lead to more acne.

Water also helps your body to absorb vitamins and minerals better and make use of them.

Water is the most important substance you can put into your body, so make sure that you’re drinking plenty of it.

Add Nutrition to Your Diet To Clear Up Skin Blemishes

eat well for healthy skin

Great nutrition lead to healthy skin. Make sure to eat many fruits and vegetables.

These provide you with the building blocks for healthy skin.

In particular, you need to make sure you’re getting plenty of vitamin A from your diet.

Vitamin A comes from vegetables and fruits that have orange coloring such as carrots and cantaloupe.

Make sure to eat plenty of this color when you eat your fruits and veggies.

You’ll also want to eat foods high in vitamin E.

Vitamin E comes from green vegetables such as dark, leafy greens and broccoli.

While you should try to get these vitamins from food, taking a multivitamin supplement can also support healthy skin.

It’s a myth that foods like pizza and chocolate cause acne.

However, you may notice that some foods do cause your skin to break out.

Those foods may be individual for you and when you notice them, stay away from them.

Drink Green Tea to Help Clear Your Skin

green tea for acne

Green tea is used by the Chinese as a traditional medicine to treat many ailments including acne and to improve general well-being.

But does it provide an effective herbal alternative to modern medication?

The answer seems to be ‘Yes’. There are only two herbal treatments that are known to be effective in treating acne and green tea is one of them

In a study by Jennifer Gan-Wong, M.D. a green tea cream was trailed against a 4% benzoyl peroxide solution on people suffering with moderate to severe acne.

The results from this research study showed that green tea was just as good in treating acne as the benzoyl peroxide.

But benzoyl peroxide dries out skin causing itching or allergic reactions.

Unlike green tea that has the added advantages of natural anti-bacterial properties and antioxidants, particularly epigallocatechin gallate which is 200 times more powerful than vitamin E at fighting free radicals.

Green tea also helps to reduce inflammation, hormonal activity and aids in detoxification - which is all good news for acne sufferers.

Green tea extract is an extremely versatile herbal supplement - it can be administered topically, often being used in creams, taken as a in the form of a pill or incorporated into your diet and drunk as a tea.

This last method is very popular (Green Tea with Honeysuckle is often known as ‘Pimple Tea’ in many Chinatowns) when drunk after a meal it aids digestion and helps to detoxify your system, getting rid of the toxins that can cause acne.

Tip: don’t drink it with sugar, this will neutralize the worthwhile effects of the tea.

It seems that taking green tea for acne is a win-win situation… It has many beneficial properties which promote good all-round health with little or no known s

Keep Oil Off Your Face

keep oil and hair off your face

There are several sources of oil that can come in contact with your face and lead to problems with acne.

Pay attention to the things that come in contact with your face.

For example, greasy hair products can come in contact with your skin and actually lead to acne.

Pay attention to the hair products you’re using and try to keep them away from your hairline.

Your scalp naturally produces oil for your hair – which is normal.

But when your hair is touching your face that oil can be transferred to your skin.

Make sure to keep hair away from your face to prevent acne.

You might not realize you even do it, but touching your face regularly can transfer dirt and oils from your hands to your face.

The more you touch your face, the more likely you’ll be to develop acne in the areas you touch.

How Zinc Plays a Role in Keeping Acne at Bay

zinc in brazil nuts

Years ago, it was thought that acne was a teenage skin problem caused by not washing the face well enough.

But science has proved that theory wrong. Acne is a skin inflammation and the condition happens to people regardless of how young or old they are.

For some people, it can be an ongoing battle trying to get and keep radiant looking skin that’s free from blemishes.

The answer to how to get great looking, blemish free skin might surprise you.

Zinc is recommended by dermatologists because of the ability this essential mineral has to fight against acne.

Zinc has incredible anti-inflammatory properties that can actually work to heal the skin from the inflammation that causes the acne to occur.

Because of its anti-inflammatory properties, zinc helps the skin repair itself from the outbreak.

By having enough zinc in your diet, not only can that help fight acne, but if you do have an acne inflammation, zinc can heal the skin faster than any other mineral.

It’s one of the reasons this mineral is also recommended in cases of diaper rash because it heals so well and fast.

Oysters have more zinc than any food you can buy or grow.

However, since not everyone is a fan of any kind of seafood - including oysters - there are other ways to make sure you get the zinc that you need to keep your skin in great shape.

Beef (like a sirloin roast) or pork chops both have plenty of zinc - but a diet rich in lean meats like chicken can also provide the amount of zinc that you need.

Eggs are a great food for a zinc rich diet and so is cheddar cheese.

You can include extra zinc in your diet in the foods that you snack on as well.

Snacks like pumpkin seeds, Brazil nuts, pecans and figs are high in zinc.

Peanut butter is a healthy way to get servings of zinc.

Wheat bran or oats have a lot of minerals that are good for you, including the zinc that will help your skin.

Chow mein noodles are another good source for zinc intake.

A very surprising source of zinc is cocoa powder.

Not only can the zinc contained in this product give you the zinc you need, but it’s good for fighting cholesterol so you get double benefits from adding this to your diet.

Foods Rich in Vitamin C Protect You From Pollutants

vitamin citrus

We live in a world that’s rich with pollutants and each of these pollutants can damage your body and your skin.

Exposure to pollutants increases how fast your body and skin ages.

You have environmental factors, the damaging rays of the sun - and for those who have a cigarette habit, smoking can also damage your body inside and out and it can nullify the Vitamin C you do take in.

Damage can also occur as a result of secondhand smoke.

Thankfully, there is a way that you can fight back against pollutants - and it’s an inexpensive way, too.

You can make sure that you’re eating a diet of foods that are rich in Vitamin C.

The first way that your body fights back against pollutants is with healthy skin.

Vitamin C is needed for the production of collagen. Vitamin C works with your body to help keep the production of collagen at a needed level.

Without enough Vitamin C, the collagen can start to break down.

Because collagen is a connective tissue in the body, once you run on a Vitamin C deficit, the skin starts to wrinkle and sag.

Of course, the easiest and most natural way to get enough Vitamin C is by having a diet rich in this vitamin.

Whenever Vitamin C is mentioned, people automatically think of oranges or orange juice - and while it’s true that both are a way to get daily doses of the vitamin, there are other choices so that you can have a variety.

Look to citrus fruits for your Vitamin C. Check out limes as well as grapefruits and lemons.

Other fruits that have Vitamin C are strawberries, kiwi, cantaloupe, guava and peaches.

You might not be aware that peppers are loaded with Vitamin C.

Both green and red peppers contain this vitamin, but the amount of Vitamin C is higher in red bell peppers than in green.

Red bell peppers have at least double the amount that the green ones do.

Of course, leafy green vegetables have this nutrient, too - and you can get that in spinach or cabbage.

Romaine lettuce, kale and turnip greens also have Vitamin C.

The good news about getting enough of this vitamin in your diet is that not only does it improve your health and skin, but it also fights back against the diseases (like cancer) that you can get from being exposed to certain pollutants.

Investigate The Underlying Causes of Blemished Skin

stress causes blemished skin

We often look at the skin in isolation and focus acne treatment on it.

But the skin is connected to all the other systems of the body and it can be affected by things going on inside it.

For example, acne can be caused by:

· Hormonal changes

· Stress

· Allergies

· Medications

· Genetics – a family history

It’s important to look at the possible causes in your own life and see if there’s something that can be changed.

You may need to change a medication or work to balance hormones.

It may also be critical for you to learn new ways to manage stress so that your body will stay balanced and inflammation of your skin will stay at bay.

You may even want to keep a diary of your acne to see if there are specific times when it gets worse.

This can give you insight into the underlying cause.

When to Seek Treatment from a Professional

If you’ve looked at lifestyle factors and taken care of simple things you can do on your own but you still have acne, you should consider seeking professional help.

There are many treatments for acne that can help to get rid of it.

In this day and age, there’s no reason to just live with acne which can be embarrassing and even painful.

A healthcare provider can help you develop a program that will keep your skin healthy.

There are some over the counter treatments such as benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid that can reduce acne, but you may find that you need some prescription help to get rid of acne.

For women, birth control pills are often prescribed to treat acne.

They work by regulating your hormones. If hormones are the cause of your problems, this is a possible solution.

Antibiotics are also prescribed to help treat acne.

You can take oral antibiotics that will start to clear acne from the inside out.

There are also topical medications that are antibiotic and penetrate the skin.

There are several topical products designed to treat acne that can only be purchased with a prescription.

Your dermatologist can discuss options with you for topical treatments.

Some dermatologists remain laser therapies or light therapies.

Laser therapy is actually used to slow down the production of oil glands in the deep layers of the skin.

Light therapy works to kill bacteria in the skin.

There are also procedures such as chemical peels and microdermabrasion that will help to reduce acne and can also help you to get rid of acne scars left over from your days of picking at your skin.

You may also want to visit with a homeopathic doctor and discuss herbal treatments for acne.

There are several supplements such as brewer’s yeast and zinc that have been shown to help acne.

When you have acne, you may feel alone and frustrated. You may feel like there’s no hope for you.

But you should know that acne has been well researched and there are many treatments for it.

You don’t need to be embarrassed about this common problem. But you shouldn’t ignore it.

What’s going on with your skin is a signal that something is off balance in your skin or somewhere else in your body.

Make sure to improve your lifestyle and seek treatment if you need it.

Choose Makeup Carefully to Reduce Skin Blemishes

cosmetics and skin blemishes

Makeup can help you to have skin that looks clearer, but it can also lead to acne if you use the wrong kind.

Avoid makeup that could clog pores even more such as foundations that contain oil.

Look for cosmetics that are labeled oil-free and noncomodogenic That means that they won’t clog pores.

Some makeup is even formulated specifically for skin that’s prone to acne.

Choose powders over cake makeups as these are less likely to cause blemishes.

In particular, mineral makeup is formulated not to clog pores and cause acne to develop on the skin.

Mineral Makeup

Rumor has it that with the demise of the hippy-era shortly after the end of the Vietnam War, a quiet cosmetic revolution was born.

Because its birth coincides with an era that prided itself on a “return to nature” culture, it is fitting that this makeup is more “natural”, as well as “earthy” than the traditional kind.

It was called “Mineral Makeup” and was made from finely ground minerals taken straight out of the earth, and was created without the preservatives, perfumes, or dyes found in traditional cosmetics.

Although it was first created over 30 years ago, Mineral Makeup has been, in recent years, taking the beauty world by storm.

One of the biggest attractions of this makeup is the light, long-lasting, natural glow it creates on the skin which can't be duplicated by other types of cosmetics.

Other fans report that they first tried mineral makeup because of its claims to skin health.

The formulations in these cosmetics are alleged to be purer and less irritating; therefore, safer for the skin than traditional makeup.

The main ingredients in these lines of cosmetics are mica, zinc oxide, and titanium dioxide.

Although these ingredients have been used in cosmetics for decades, one of the factors that sets Mineral Makeup aside from the others is the smooth, long lasting coverage that comes, in part, from “micronizing”, or pulverizing the minerals so that they are microscopic or nanoparticle in size.

The creators of this makeup line also take great pains to make sure that there are no synthetics, perfumes, or dyes in the makeup.

Some companies also add a mineral that helps this line of makeup give a “candlelight glow” to the skin: bismuth oxychloride.

Although it is a mineral, Bismuth OxyChloride is not found in the earth. It is actually a biproduct of lead and copper processing.

This agent is frequently used to “bulk up” or bind products, and to some women, can be an irritant.

In large quantities, Bismuth causes itching, redness, and irritation and can also cause cystic acne in some who use it.

Proponents of mineral makeup say that it's important to study the ingredients before purchasing the makeup.

Mineral makeup generally falls into two categories: those who do not include synthetics, like paraben preservatives, and those who do.

If the aim in buying this makeup is china-doll smoothness, then whether the compound contains ingredients that can't be dug straight from the earth is not the goal.

If the attraction to this makeup line is its more “natural” qualities, then it is important to find makeup that contains only products that can be found in the earth.

The Benefits of Using At Home Facial Masks

home facial mask

You try to eat right and you try to make sure you get enough exercise.

You make sure that your face is make-up and oil free before you hit the pillow every night.

Do you really need to add using an at home facial mask to your list of ways to keep yourself healthy?

Yes, you do for your skin’s sake - because even the most diligent nighttime cleansing routine can’t take the place of the benefits offered by using a facial mask.

The ingredients in a facial mask get down below the top layer of skin to the part you can’t see.

What you can’t see is that your skin is always active.

It’s protecting you from illness by keeping out germs and it’s busy making new skin cells.

The old cells die, and you don’t want them hanging around.

You want to use a facial mask to help shed that dead skin and tighten up your skin - that’s the reason why your face will feel tight after a facial - your skin has been cleansed and tightened.

By regularly using a facial mask (some people opt for once a week, some for twice) you can have better looking skin that’s soft and glowing with vitality.

To get this great looking skin, you’ll need to choose a mask that’s right for you.

Choosing a mask without checking to see if it’ll work with your skin type can be a mistake.

Just as the same clothes aren’t suited for all body types, neither is the same facial mask right for all skin types.

Masks come in many different types and there’s one suited for you.

If you’re older, then an at home facial mask can help to make your skin look toned, which in turn can make you have younger looking skin where you feel better about your appearance.

You’ll want a mask that can offer the benefits of adding moisture to your skin.

With oily skin, you know how difficult it can be to keep acne at bay and you don’t want to get a facial mask that can inadvertently add to problem skin.

If you do have oily skin, look for a mask that clarifies skin and works to prevent breakouts.

Some of the masks for oily skin may have either clay or sulfur-based ingredients.

For people who have dry skin, a mask can help bring moisture back and reduce that flaky appearance you can get when your skin sloughs off in particles from a lack of hydration in the skin.

Using the right kind of facial mask is essential to give your skin what it needs to thrive - this is why it’s important that you don’t think any old facial will do.

You want one that’s tailor made for your skin.

You can use an at home facial mask that you purchase or you can put together one that you create from ingredients found in your home.

Which one you choose to go with will depend on how much time you have to mix ingredients and how convenient you want the process to be.

Whatever you do, get started now so that you give your skin the protection it needs.

The Best Facial Mask for Your Skin Type

The skin care routine you use depends on your skin type and your lifestyle.

So many of us are busy and it can be all to tempting to cut down on skin care - especially if it’s time consuming.

No one has hours to devote to mixing up ingredients and then sitting around with a facial mask on waiting for skin to be toned and tightened.

Thankfully, you don’t have to mix your own (even natural facial masks can be purchased) and you don’t have to spend a lot of time on a mask. You can do one in about ten minutes, some in five.

The best facial mask will be one that you fits your skin type and is convenient enough to make wanting to use it hassle free.

Masks come in different forms and some with varying results such as: masks meant to tighten your skin.

These masks can either hydrate or cleanse problem skin.

If you have combination skin, you’ll want to get a mask made for that type of skin.

Collagen masks are meant to soothe wrinkles and keep the skin looking more youthful.

These masks are usually a cream that you can apply or that comes in sheet masks.

You can get the sheet masks in single or multi-packs and they’re fast and easy to use, though some of them can be expensive, depending on which one you buy.

Collagen masks are best for someone who wants smoother skin.

The best facial mask will use ingredients that are as close to nature as possible.

You’ll see an ingredient list like cucumber, lemon, avocado, honey and some even have a hint of cinnamon.

The more natural a facial mask is, the better it will be on your skin.

If you have a problem with skin tone that tends to be darker in some areas but lighter in others, you can even find facial masks to give your skin a more even appeal.

These are called whitening facial masks and can be done either at a day spa or salon or even purchased and used in the comfort of your own home.

For those with dry skin, you do want to be cautious using masks that even out skin tone.

Peel-off masks are still as popular today as they have been in years past.

These types of masks can come in powder form and require them to be mixed with water.

Once they’re mixed, users just apply the mixture to the skin using an applicator stick.

The mixture will gently harden on the face, creating a mask. When the time is up, you just remove the mask by peeling it away as a whole.

A benefit of this type of mask is that they’re inexpensive, can help with blemishes (like blackheads) and are easy to use.

Did you know that you can even buy facial masks that were made for stressed skin?

Stressed skin is skin that’s been damaged by factors like overexposure to the sun, scars (such as acne scars) and even damaged by stressful living.

The best facial mask for your face is one that is as close to natural as possible, made for your skin type and one that you’ll want to use because it’s easy and keeps your skin younger looking.

While no skin care routine can prevent aging completely, you can certainly keep it from showing up on your face.

Mix all ingredients in a blender. Apply to the face and neck and leave on for 20 mins and then wash off with warm water. Pat dry.

Resources and Further Research:

All home remedies for acne are enhanced by proper vitamin and mineral supplementation.

When hormones cause too much oil to be produced, or skin cells block the path of the oil, you can get blackheads or whiteheads.

Drink a lot of water, from 8 glasses up to 1 gallon a day. This will clean your system out and clear your skin.

Be sure that the towel you are using is clean. A dirty towel will simply rub dirt/oil back into your skin.

Change your pillowcases every night. Oil can build up on the case and that could be ground into your skin.

Below here I will feature some products for you to check out, including my book on skin care and also my acne PLR packs for webmasters looking for fresh PLR content for their blogs.
