How to Deal with Mood Swings During Menopause

What is menopause? It is the natural process by which a woman's ability to reproduce comes to an end. This does not happen all of a sudden but even so, can be quite a painful process.

This is because menopause subjects the female body to physiological disturbances as well as emotional and mental upheavals.

For this reason, the menopausal period, which is usually around the early 50’s is regarded as a very significant and difficult period in a woman’s life. She needs emotional, as well as moral, support from her family in order to cope with the situation.

In discussing the change in behaviour of a menopausal woman, one must remember that it is usually difficult for her to accept the reality that she can no longer reproduce.

This in itself is a very disturbing feeling. Because of this, she may feel depressed and therefore, sometimes her reactions may be taken the wrong way.

Interestingly, she fully realises that she is not behaving normally but, as mood swings are a naturally occurring part of menopause, she can also feel powerless to change.

This does not mean that mood swings cannot be treated. Here are some useful tips for you if you are one of the menopausal women who want to get rid of them.

1. Try to be organised. If you have housework to do, first divide it into steps.

This will enable you complete your work in a systematic manner, leading to a feeling of satisfaction and a sense of achievement. In turn this will improve your mood.

2. Indulge in the activities that you like the most, literally anything which you enjoy. This might be cooking, baking, hanging out or even painting.

Some women prefer to have regular sessions of exercise. Physical activity keeps them fresh and healthy, which in turn improves their mood.

3. Have adequate amounts of rest and sleep as relaxation is important. Make it a routine to go to bed early so that your body does not get tired and so that you stay healthy.

Also try to avoid alcoholic drinks and coffee. These drinks have the effect of weighing down your system, leaving you feeling sluggish, which ultimately shows in your mood.

4. Improve your eating habits if necessary, by having a healthy balanced diet. For the best results, fatty foods must be avoided and the amounts eaten of proteins and good carbs should be increased.
