How to Find and Retrieve an Escaped Pet in the House

Every once in a while, your pet may escape from it's cage. And when they do, they are harder to find than your television remote.

And even if you do find it, there is no guarantee that in the next few seconds you will be able to bring it back to it's cage.

Pets are natural escape artists and can do everything imaginable to get out of their cages and hide in places that suit their need.

Here are the ways to catch, find and retrieve your runaway pet:

1. Begin your search inside the cage.

This may sound stupid but many owners mistakenly suspect that their pet escaped even if it is just hiding somewhere inside the cage.

Once you are certain that your escapee is really an escapee, search near the cage and work your way from there.

2. Pets love to hide behind anything.

Search along the dashboards, behind the sofa and furniture. Check inside drawers, shelves, bookcases, and cabinets.

Check behind, in and out of anything that can be a possible hiding spot.

3. Remove the cushions from chairs and couches.

Check along the walls. Check the holes of your furniture.

4. Look inside backpacks, bags, and purses.

Look inside your pantry or where your food is stored. Inside the refrigerator may be an attractive place.

5. Look inside shoes, boots, and other small and dark places that you can think of.

Tip: just because the holes are too small and the places are too high means that the pet isn't there.

Snakes, lizards, mice, rats and other small caged pets are surprisingly good in squeezing through smallest of places.

6. Place a treat inside the cage and keep it open while you are searching for your pet.

7. Place any crinkly items around the house so that you can hear your pet moving around.

8. Scatter flour around the areas where your pet might be hiding. Any presence can be seen through it's footprints.

9. Once you see your pet, secure the area around it with cardboard or any solid materials that can be made as walls.

10. Approach your pet slowly.

Any abrupt movement will scare your pet and make the retrieval more difficult. If your pet has a tendency to bite, make sure that you take extra precaution.

11. Once you have it, place it back inside the cage.
