How to Use A Goal Setting Worksheet

A goal setting worksheet is a vital tool for setting goals as it can help you to formulate and plan them.

Setting goals can be quite a daunting process, especially if you have never done this before, and it can be difficult to know where to start.

Goal setting worksheets are pieces of paper we use to plan what needs to be done to achieve our goal, and to measure our progress towards it.

The more time we take on this step, the more focused and organized we will be when we begin the process of fulfilling our goals.

You can download sample goal setting worksheets from the internet, or create your own easily enough.

Use one sheet for each goal, and at the top of the paper, write the goal down. Write a short description of it, and be as specific as possible.

If you want to own a particular car, write down the colour, make, model and a detailed description of it.

If your goal is to travel, write down the exact location you will visit and what you will do when you get there.

If you are after a career change, write down the type of job you want to be doing.

The more descriptive you are, the more you will be motivated to achieve that goal.

Write a paragraph explaining what attaining this goal will mean to you, how you will feel when you have achieved it and the impact it will have upon your life.

This will help motivate you.

Set a ‘due date’ for achieving the goal.

This gives you a time frame. Now you can work out how long you have to complete it and can plan steps leading to it.

For example, if your goal is to go on vacation in a year’s time, and you know it will cost you $3000, you know that you will need to save $250 per month, and in six month’s time you will need to have saved $1,500.

If your goal is to change you career, you may need to learn new skills, so will need to set a time frame to research courses and enrol in college.

Now you can plan a schedule for checking your progress regularly to make sure you are on track; you may choose to check this every month for shorter term goals, or every three months if it is a longer term goal.

You will be able to mark on your goal setting worksheet whether you are on track and have completed the steps you planned.

You will also be able to identify if there have been any problems, and adjust your goal if necessary.

You may want to personalise your goal setting worksheet with fluorescent high lighter pens, or pictures representing your goal.

Display it where you can see it regularly- if you read it each day your motivation levels should remain high.

You should find that using goal setting worksheets will help you to plan your goals and monitor your progress as you work towards achieving them.
