Male Matters of the Heart

For men, heart disease is a pretty serious concern. It's the number one killer of men in the United States. The risk for heart disease begins to rise rapidly as a man passes the age of 45. And the risk is even greater for African American men who tend to be twice as likely to die from heart disease as white men.

According to one major study, the Framingham study, men have a 49% risk of developing heart disease in their lifetime after age 40. That makes heart disease something that all men should pay attention to and work to prevent.

The good news is that heart disease is on the decline. That's probably due to an increased awareness of healthy lifestyle factors as well as improvements in early treatment of heart disease.

So what can you do to minimize your risk of heart disease? There are several major lifestyle habits that you need to focus on when it comes to your heart. First and foremost, you need to stop using tobacco if you smoke or use chewing tobacco, snuff, or dip. These products are the number one risk factor for heart disease. Now is the time to stop.

You also need to monitor your blood pressure. If you tend to have high blood pressure, a diet low in sodium and moderate exercise can help you to lower it. In some cases you'll need to take medication prescribed by your doctor to control blood pressure.

You also need to watch your blood cholesterol. Cholesterol builds up in the blood vessels and causes them to narrow and harden. This is another major factor for heart risk. Make sure to eat a diet low in saturated and trans fat and cholesterol. You also want to make sure you get plenty of healthy unsaturated fat to improve your heart health.

Adding more fruits and vegetables to your diet can also improve your heart health. There are many nutrients that directly improve heart function. You'll also increase the amount of fiber in your diet, which helps to naturally lower cholesterol.

Finally, it's crucial that you get some physical activity every day. You don't have to be a gym rat to get what you need. A 30-minute walk is enough to drastically improve your heart health if you're sedentary.

Men need to take the threat of heart disease very seriously. It's the number one killer and it can also take away your quality of life. But with a few simple lifestyle changes you can live longer and better.

It’s much better to keep yourself from developing heart disease than to try to keep it from getting worse later.
