Menopause - Tips for Using Herbal and Natural Supplements Safely

Learning how to cope with menopause is not only about learning the methods to be used. It is about applying these methods safely so that they can produce the desired results without any side effects.

There is some controversy over the use of herbal and natural supplements for menopausal symptoms. That is why getting some practical advice on how to use them safely will certainly be of help to you.

How safe are your options? All of the most widely recommended herbal, plant and other natural supplements for menopause symptoms have a good record for safety. These include black cohosh, ginseng root, flaxseed, soy and St. John's Wort.

However, having a good safety record does not mean they are completely free from side effects. It is important for you to personally take protective measures.

Consult your doctor about the safety of the supplements especially if you have a chronic medical condition and/or take any medications.

While herbal and plant extracts may be perfectly safe for healthy individuals, they may have an adverse effect on someone who has a medical problem.

For instance Kava which, in the past, was widely recommended for menopause symptoms was found to be toxic to the liver, thereby posing a serious health risk to people with liver conditions.

In the same way, a perfectly safe herbal or natural active ingredient may interact adversely with some ingredient of a medication, and cause serious problems.

When you discuss the intake of a supplement with your doctor, you should discuss your medical history and any drugs you are taking. Your doctor should be able to warn you about any possible side effects.

They can also monitor your condition closely while taking the supplement to ensure that it is not causing any problems.

Work out the safest supplement dosage, given your individual circumstances. You must adhere to the set safest daily dosages which apply to vitamins and minerals. Just remember to take into account the amounts of these nutrients that you get with food.

When it comes to plant supplements, there are no set safe dosages yet. You need to consider the recommendations of the manufacturer, but it is best to ask your doctor as well.

You need to consider the safest dosage in line with any medications and other supplements you may be taking for menopause symptoms.

You must be extremely careful when using two supplements with similar effects such as soy and flaxseed, for instance. Reducing the dosages of the two by half may actually prove ineffective and/or unsafe.
