9 Activities That Clear Your Mind

Our bodies get rest every night, but our brains rarely do. We have thoughts bouncing around in our heads all day. At night we dream.

Giving your brain a rest can do wonders for your mental and physical health.

Unfortunately, the natural state of your brain is to generate thoughts.

The only way to clear it is to actively do something to make that happen. Your brain will just continue to make noise if you try a passive approach.

Use these tips to clear your mind and give it the rest it deserves:

1. Meditation.

One of the reasons for meditating is clearing the mind. The other options on this list accomplish this as a side effect.

Meditation is as simple as can be, but deceptively challenging. It challenges your mind and your body.

It's not easy to sit still for an extended period of time, but that's part of the challenge.

2. Exercise.

Strenuous exercise is a great way to clear your mind. There's something about using your body that stops the chatter going on between your ears.

Casual exercise won't work in most cases. You need to really work.

3. Walking.

A nice walk, especially after dark or before sunrise can be very calming. The dark helps because you're less visually stimulated.

The repetitive nature of walking can be an effective way to clear out the cobwebs. Your brain is also busy moving your feet and maintaining your balance.

4. Doing something exciting.

It's believed that many people are attracted to extreme sports like BASE jumping because of the clearing effect it has on the brain.

If you leap off a skyscraper with a parachute on your back, you're not worrying about paying the water bill at that moment.

Doing anything scary or intense can accomplish the same thing. What would you consider to be an intense activity? Try it.

5. Mowing the grass.

A monotonous activity can also be helpful. This includes driving in low traffic situations, taking a shower, or washing the dishes.

Your mind can partially shut down and relax.

6. Mindfulness.

Any activity can help to clear your mind if you focus fully on it.

You can experience a mind clearing effect while changing your oil, reading a book, or doing laundry.

Focus is one way to clear and calm your mind and achieve the state of living with mindfulness.

7. Playing with a pet.

Pets are soothing and enjoyable. Sitting on the deck with your dog or curled up on the couch with your cat can be a soothing activity.

There's something special about pets. They make few demands and are always happy with you.

If only people were so easy!

8. Declutter.

Cleaning your home or workspace can do wonders for the thoughts racing around in your head.

A clean and tidy space creates calm and serenity. If you declutter mindfully, you'll be getting twice the benefit.

9. Make lists.

When you have a lot to do, your brain is working overtime to keep everything straight. Using a simple list can empty out your brain.

You won't believe how much this can help. Lists can release a lot of resources being used by your brain.

Try to clear your mind at least once each day. You'll find over time that it will naturally calm down, but it takes time.

Our brains are thought-producing machines that can run wild if not managed.

Clearing your mind is an active process.

There are many ways to accomplish it. Experiment and discover what works for you.

Writing in a journal is a great way to clear your mind and develop mindfulness in your daily actions. Take the time to check out some of the gorgeousjournals and notebooks here that you can order online and get delivered to your door.

9 Tips for Balancing Work and Home

Balancing home and work is a constant battle. It seems that one suffers while the other thrives.

It's not an easy balancing act, but it can be done.

The key is to make the most of your time, get help, maximize your resources, and eliminate non-essential activities that don't provide enjoyment.

Consider these ideas:

1. Avoid wasting time at work.

If you can get more done at work during normal business hours, you can avoid having to stay late or take your work home.

The average office worker wastes the majority of the day.

Between breaks, getting a drink, using the restroom, socializing, and the internet, it's a wonder anything gets accomplished.

Make the most of your time at work.

Not only will you impress your boss, but you might even be able to leave a little earlier each day and spend that time with your family.

2. Avoid wasting time at home.

Are you spending your time wisely at home? Are you getting things done and spending time with your family? Or are you wasting time in front of the TV?

You might already have all the time you need to have a balanced life if you'll just use your time to do things that are important to you.

3. Delegate at work.

Are you utilizing your employees and coworkers as much as possible? Some people can't seem to trust others to do anything important.

You can get more done each day if you make the most of your resources. Get the help you need.

4. Delegate at home.

Are you, your spouse, and children all sharing the load at home? The sooner things get done, the sooner you can spend quality time together.

Would it be possible to hire a housecleaning service or someone to mow the lawn?

5. Maximize your productivity.

It's not just about not wasting your time, it's doing things intelligently.

Is there a quicker way to accomplish your tasks each day? What could you be doing more efficiently?

6. Say 'no' more often.

Odds are that you have activities and obligations in your life that are actually optional. Some of them you don't even enjoy.

Why spend your time on these things? If you don't have to do it, consider not doing it.

Learning to say 'no' more often can keep these activities from encroaching on your life.

7. Telecommute.

Check with your employer and see if you can work from home part of the week. You'll save the time you'd normally be driving.

You'll have fewer distractions, too. You can also work in your pajamas for a nice change of pace.

8. Make the most of your commute.

Can you make some of your phone calls while driving? Maybe you can sharpen your skills by listening to books on tape.

Maybe you can carpool and get some real work done while someone else drives.

9. Make the most of your time at home.

Do things as a family. That doesn't mean sitting in the same room staring at a digital screen.

Go to the park. Take ride to the ice cream parlor. Play a game. You need less time together if you spend the time you have together wisely.

It can be challenging to manage both your home and work life. This struggle has been going on since the beginning of civilization.

While it's not easy, you can find a balance point in your life.

Learn to be more efficient and industrious at home and at work. Maximize your use of your resources.

Eliminate unnecessary activities. Make a balanced life a priority.
