Choosing The Best Essential Oils for Headaches
Headaches can be triggered by a number of causes. You can get a headache due to fluctuating hormones. Sinus headaches and tension headaches are also common.
But knowing what kind of headache you have doesn't take away the pain of having it.
Most people reach for medication when they feel that tension and pain but many medications have a rebound effect.
They'll take care of that headache but turn around and give you another one until you get caught in the headache cycle.
Essential oils don't do that. They treat the headache without giving you a rebound one.
And just as there are different over the counter medications that you can take for headaches, there are different essential oils you can use. Some of these are specific to the kind of headache that you have.
One of the oils good for treating headaches is peppermint oil.
This essential oil contains menthol. This ingredient is well known to ease the pain associated with a variety of headaches.
The reason it does this is because menthol has an anesthetic effect. Because peppermint essential oil is heavily concentrated, it's best to use this one with a carrier oil if you plan to apply it topically to your forehead or the area where your headache is located.
Lavender oil, like peppermint oil is also good for headaches. It can calm them because it has ingredients that provide users with a sedative makeup that alleviates the throbbing pain.
This is a good oil for a variety of headaches, including migraines. One of the best ways to use this to treat headaches is to put the oil in your bath water. The vapors given off by the oil will bring relief.
Eucalyptus oil is known to bring relief from headaches especially the kinds that are caused by sinus pressure.
You can use this one as a smelling vapor but if you use it directly on your skin, you'll have to mix it with a carrier oil. This oil is too potent to be applied on the skin without dilution.
Ginger essential oil can be used to treat headaches. This oil has a very strong scent.
It's usually used by placing a few of the drops of oil into water to dilute it. This is then used as a vapor or massaged onto the skin where the ache is.
Sandalwood essential oil has a sedative effect and the properties are also known to cause a lift in moods for those who might feel down because of headache pain.
The oil must be diluted and can be applied directly to the skin.
When you think of chamomile, you might picture the tea, but chamomile essential oil is good for treating headaches because it has both anesthetic as well as ant-inflammatory properties.
