Dog Training Tips To Help You Train Your Dog

If you're new to dog training or are having difficulty training a dog these tips may help you learn to effectively train. You'll be more confident in your abilities and will be able to effectively train your dog without becoming frustrated.

1. Be the dominant.

Being the dominant is important when trying to train a dog because it helps them learn where their place is and that they should follow you and not try to lead.

You need to establish yourself as the leader before attempting to train any dog.

There are several ways to establish dominance over your dog including standing over your dog when giving commands rather than kneeling, eating your breakfast before feeding your dog, and walking through doorways or gates first rather than allowing your dog to go first.

Dogs naturally pick up on these social cues and will learn their place and be more likely to follow your lead if you've previously established dominance.

Establishing dominance has nothing to do with being harsh or withholding love, and everything to do with being a leader.

2. Be consistent.

Being consistent with training is one of the most important tips being shared.

Without consistency your dog will be confused and unsure of what you're asking of him. Training a dog is no different than training a child, consistency is the key to obedience.

It may sound harsh to compare children and dogs, but really all dog training is, is parenting your dog.

Consistency in training will help your dog master commands and skills faster, and it will help them to be more open to more advanced training.

3. Be loving.

By being loving to your dog, you're giving them a reason to listen to you. It's not all about being dominant, you must form a bond with your dog as well.

You must nurture your dog and meet his needs so that he'll want to comply when you begin training.

A loved dog is a dog that wants to please it's owner.

4. Be Firm.

When you give commands, be firm. You don't want to be meek or soft spoken when trying to train a dog because your dog won't listen.

You have to let your pet know that compliance is not an option. You are not asking your dog to sit.

You're not requesting or hoping your dog will sit. You're commanding your dog to sit.

Give commands in a firm and self assured manor. You don't have to yell at your dog, but you will need to project your voice.

5. Reinforce positive behaviors.

Reinforcing positive behaviors is more effective than punishing a dog for bad behaviors.

Give your dog encouraging words, treats, and attention when he does something you want him to do.

After a while of consistently rewarding good behavior, your dog will make the connection and begin to repeat the desired action.

It takes time and patience, but it's worth the effort to have a well trained pooch.

6. Have only one trainer at first.

Having multiple trainers at first can be confusing for your dog at first and can result in your dog rebelling against the training process.

Once your dog has mastered the commands then he'll be ready to take them from multiple people, until then designate one person to train your dog whether it's you or someone you hire to do the training for you.

7. Go slowly.

Only work on one command with your dog at a time. Slowly introduce new commands as your dog masters each one.

It may seem like it takes a long time to train your dog this way, but it will actually save time and ensure your dog is properly trained.

8. Exercise is vital for dog training.

Training your dog will be easier if he has used up some of his excess energy.

Make sure your dog has had adequate exercise before attempting to teach training commands and he will be able to pay attention to you for longer and will be more likely to follow commands.

An exercised dog is also a happier and healthier dog.

9. Structure is important.

Providing your dog with a structured environment will make the transition to training easier for both you and your pet.

Feed, exercise, and train your dog at the same times each day if it's possible.

Your dog will get used to the routine and will soon become accustomed to working on training commands at a certain time.

10. Set boundaries.

Set boundaries with your dog from the beginning, and if you haven't already then start now. If you don't want your dog in your chair, move him and tell him no each time you see him in the chair.

If you don't want him in the kitchen, tell him so each time and remove him from the room.

Setting boundaries is the beginning of training a dog and needs to be done before mastering additional commands.

11. Practice, and then practice some more.

The single most important dog training tip is to practice, practice, practice.

Your dog isn't going to be perfect and he'll struggle with some commands.

How fast training is mastered depends on the dog, you as a trainer, and your relationship with the dog.

Commit to training your dog and spend time helping him succeed.

12. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

Knowing when to ask for help is the sign of a true leader.

If you've put all you have into training your dog and are still not seeing the results you had hoped for, there is nothing wrong with contacting a professional to help.

Look online for reviews or ask friends and family for referral to find a great dog trainer.

With time and patience, any dog can be trained, so make sure you start early.

The Basics of Training Your Dog

Canine training is the same as for all animals, you communicate to your dog what you want him to do; when the dog has performed as desired, you reward him.

You immediately repeat the exercise a few times and review it frequently until the dog’s response to the command is practically automatic.

But of course it isn’t quite as simple as it sounds.

When giving commands, be calm, distinct, brief, patient, and perfectly clear in repeating your commands.

Above all, be consistent.

If your dog just sits there cocking his ears with a lost look, it is obvious you are not getting your message across and that you need to improve your communications system.

Start over again trying to clarify your command, while increasing the will power behind it.

One-word commands are best at first. Later on you can use the key word in a sentence, pronouncing it gradually and not as focused.

When your dog has grasped your meaning and performed correctly, and has been rewarded, repeat the performance at once in order to fix it in his memory.

Three or four times are sufficient for the first lesson because you don’t want to bore him with it.

You should repeat the lessons again the next day, and thereafter at the beginning of each training session until he has mastered it. You will see that your dog really enjoys showing off what he learned to do.

The learning process from the dog’s point of view, involves listening attentively and watching you as you give a command, realizing that each sound and gesture signifies something he is being asked to do.

Once this sequence has been established in his mind, there is no limit to what he can learn.

Please do not attempt to school a tired dog, or an ailing one, or one that has just eaten. The dog will only become frustrated, irritable, and his only memory of your time together will always be an unpleasant one.

You’ll achieve the same results if you are nervous, irritable, or in a bad mood. Give him your time, attention, patience, and love.
