How To Keep Cool In The Summer Months

Summertime means long days at the beach, pool parties, and outdoor barbecues. For many of us, this is the happiest time of year, and a chance to really kick back, relax, and embrace the sunshine.

The problem is that despite the benefits, the sun can really take its toll on our bodies. In addition to being exposed to harmful UV rays, we also sweat more because of the increased temperature, and this causes us to overheat faster and leads to dehydration.

Fortunately, we have the advice that you need to stay safe in the sun. If you want to enjoy the warm weather without feeling miserable, try these top tips for keeping cool.

Drink Plenty of Water

Drinking enough water will help keep your body hydrated, which will prevent it from overheating. This is particularly important during the hot summer months.

Try drinking half your weight in ounces every day. So if you weigh 100 pounds (45kg), drink 50oz (150ml) of water each day.

If you’re worried about not having any liquid available, make sure you carry around a bottle with you wherever you go.

This is a good habit to get into to ensure you are always well equipped with water.

If you are not keen on the taste of plain water, you can add drops of juice or flavor. The most important thing is to ensure that you are getting plenty of water to stay cool and hydrated.

Wear Sunscreen

Wearing sunscreen is an easy way to protect yourself against the damaging effects of the sun. It's important to remember that there are different types of sunscreen out there.

If you are going to be spending lots of time outdoors, you should apply it 30 minutes before you head outside, and reapply after swimming or sweating.

Make sure you choose one that has SPF 15 or higher and is suitable for your skin type.

Stay Indoors During Peak Sunlight Hours

The sun tends to be at its hottest between the hours of 11 am and 3 pm, and so it is a good idea to avoid heading outside during this time if you are looking to stay cool and safe.

Try to plan activities and work around these times to ensure that you are avoiding the sun during the hottest part of the day.

Dress Appropriately

When you're planning on spending some time outdoors, you don't want to be wearing anything too heavy, as this will only make you feel hotter.

Instead, opt for light-colored clothing that won't absorb much heat, such as white cotton shirts, shorts, skirts, etc.

Opt for natural fibers as opposed to man-made materials. Fabrics such as cotton and linen will keep you cool and comfortable, while man-made materials can hold sweat, causing you to feel hot and uncomfortable.

Avoid Alcohol

Alcoholic drinks contain large amounts of sugar, which can cause you to become dehydrated quickly.

This can lead to headaches, dizziness, nausea, and other unpleasant symptoms. It's best to avoid them altogether when you're trying to stay cool.

If you do have an alcoholic drink, make sure you balance this with plenty of water.

Take A Nap

Taking a short nap during the afternoon will give you a chance to rest and recharge your energy levels.

Taking a quick power nap can actually boost your immune system and improve your overall health - as well as keep you cool.

Try and schedule your nap during the hottest part of the day to avoid the worst of the heat.

Keeping yourself cool and hydrated throughout the summer months is essential if you want to enjoy all of the fun that comes with being outside.

By following these tips, you'll be able to enjoy outdoor activities without feeling uncomfortable or ill.
