Painting Portraits in Oil and Pencil Sketches
by Helene Malmsio
(Want to learn how to draw and paint portraits?)
Harry and Audrey - shame about the camara flashing
I took a few lessons in the 1980's to learn about proportions and so on when sketching portraits.
Before then I could 'sort of' get someone's image, but I was never happy as it was never technically correct.
Taking those few lessons turned my world around, and I very quickly became actually quite good in sketching and painting portraits.
Haven't done any in years, but above are a few early ones, pity the oil painting is spoiled by the camera flashlight, but you get some idea of how they looked.
I still have my original sketch pad the I used in m classes, so one day I'll post those, with some instructions about how to draw portraits.
Some of the images (click on the thumbnails to see larger picture) are of me working on the HUGE stained glass overlay illuminated mural for Rock of Ages in the X nightclub in Melbourne around 1988.
I had to sketch out the 'cartoons' of the portraits first, then lay the acrylic 8' x 4' panels over it and start outlining and pouring paint into the cavities with a dropper... massive job for a 38' long mural, painted with an eyedropper!
