Renovate Your Life With These Changes

You've finally had enough. You want to make some major changes. You might even think you want to change everything in your life.

There are many ways to go about this. You can make smaller changes to multiple parts of your life or you can make just one or two huge changes.

If you're thinking, "I'll just make several huge changes," consider making changes one at a time and see how that goes.

You might find that you need to change less than you think to be happier and more excited about your life.

Regardless of the extent of changes you wish, you can change your life, starting today!

Consider these ideas:

1. Health.
If you have current health issues that can be corrected or minimized, this can make a huge difference in your life.

Losing weight, eliminating your need for certain medications, or finally fixing that trick knee of yours can have far-reaching effects.

Deal with your major aches, pains, and anything else that is limiting your life in any way.

Simple dietary changes can affect your weight, health, and mood.

2. Career.
Whether you need an entirely new career or just a new employer, there's no time like the present to make a change.

You spend a lot of time at your job, so this change can have a big impact on your life.

What would you rather do? Do you need to go back to school? Make a plan.

3. Home.
Do you live in the city? Maybe it's time to move to the suburbs or the country. Maybe you don't enjoy having a yard and moving to a condo sounds right up your alley.

You can even pack your bags and move to a new city, state, or country. Where would you like to live?

4. Social network.
Maybe you've always dreamed of joining a motorcycle club and hanging out with a bunch of tough guys.

Maybe you admire artists and other creative types.

Figure out where your type of people congregates and make contact.

5. Life philosophy.
Perhaps you want to live a more minimal existence and study Yoga in depth. Are you a fan of Stoicism and want to live your life by that philosophy?

Changing how you view life and the world is the biggest change you can make. Everything is affected.

6. Change your relationship status.
You can get married or divorced. Both of these changes are more than a little significant. Think carefully before making one of these changes.

7. Get more sleep.
If you're not sleeping enough, more sleep can make all the difference.

8. Change the little things.
Look at each room in your house. Look at each component of your life.
Now ask yourself, 'What can I improve?' And then do it.

It might be cleaning up the trash you've been storing behind your computer monitor for the last month, fixing the leaking faucet, or fixing the rattle on your car.

Make 100 of these little changes and your life will be different. This is easy enough to do that anyone can do it. The momentum and sense of accomplishment you create are amazing.

There are many ways you can renovate your life. While it's tempting to make huge changes when you're unhappy, sometimes several smaller changes can be just as effective and less stressful.

Changing to a healthier diet, finding a new job locally, and making a couple of new friends can alter your life radically without the need for shaving your head and moving to Tibet.

Perform a Silent Retreat Without Leaving Home

It's not necessary to go to a fancy meditation retreat in the mountains if you want a few days of silence. What's the point? You can do that at home and save yourself some money.

Maybe you don't have the time or money to travel. You can do just as well on your own at home. If you can't talk, what do you need other people for at a retreat?

Take a weekend and try these ideas to conduct a personal silent retreat at home:

1. Clear your schedule.
You can't have people bothering you if you're going to perform a silent retreat. Let everyone know you won't be available for a day or two or 10.

Think about everyone that might need to communicate with you and inform them. Reschedule any appointments for another time.

2. Take care of any business before your silent retreat.
Whether you need to go shopping, make phone calls, or get an oil change, do it before your retreat.

Either get it done, or plan to do it another time. Think about your menu and get the necessary groceries.

3. Unplug.
Can a silent retreat include TV and the internet?
It's up to you but consider eliminating all electronic devices and distractions. The point is to spend some quality time with yourself.

You'll learn a lot about yourself by going without your normal distractions for a few days.

4. Be patient.
If you're not used to being alone and quiet, it can be quite maddening. Just allow yourself to feel whatever it is you're feeling and relax.

The end will come soon enough. Boredom is part of the game.

5. Decide what you're going to do.
What activities do you consider to be acceptable? Are you going to get caught up on work? Read? Meditate? Draw? Write?

Plant a garden? Enjoy nature? Walk? Address your future? Heal from your past? Consider how you want to spend your time.

6. Create a schedule.
Avoid the temptation to just play it by ear. Have a set of activities planned and allow yourself to choose from them.

When one becomes too boring, stick with it for a while before moving to another activity.

7. Make mindfulness a priority.
Avoid allowing yourself to just sit around and ruminate. Have defined tasks and keep your attention on those tasks.

If you really want a break, this is the best break you can give yourself. You mind is always running at full speed but being mindful can relax it.

8. Use a journal.
Make the most of your retreat by capturing your thoughts, feelings, and ideas.

Don't let those great insights go to waste. Ensure that you record them for future reference.

9. Consider getting out of the house.
You don't have to conduct your silent retreat at home. Staying home is acceptable, but there are other alternatives.

Consider going camping or renting a cabin. Even a hotel room can be an option.

What type of setting would inspire you? Maybe you can camp in the backyard.

Silent retreats are nothing new. It's a great way to train yourself to be mindful, present, and to give your body a well-deserved rest.

In Western civilization, a silent retreat is necessary from time to time.

We could all use a break. Give yourself this gift.

It will only take a few days and you'll emerge as good as new!
