The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo - online book review

This novel is the first book in the best-selling trilogy by Stieg Larsson. Henrik Vanger, a wealthy, aging business mogul, hires main character Mikael Blomkvist, a middle aged journalist with his career in decline due to a libel case to uncover the mystery of what happened to his niece.

Lisabeth Salander the twenty-four year old character after which the novel is titled is a highly skilled computer hacker who joins Mikael’s investigation of the wealthy Vanger family.

Under the pretense of writing the family history, Mikael and Lisabeth investigate the dark secrets of the Vanger family’s past.

If you enjoy this book, you’ll also like the follow up novels in this series. After Salander’s adventures in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Swedish author Larsson continued the series with The Girl Who Played with Fire followed by The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.

What makes this series so appealing to reader’s across the board is Larsson’s mastery of hard hitting characters including the dysfunctional Vanger family. While the book may have a slower pace in the beginning, it does pick up and the exhilarating mystery begins.

The alliance that Lisabeth Salander and Mikael form is a quest for truth in a world where truth kills. As this duo grows closer to discovering the key to the old mystery, they will uncover grotesque secrets that some members of the family will kill to keep.

Larsson, the author of this compelling trilogy died of a heart attack in November 2004, shortly after selling his manuscripts to a publishing house.

According to several popular websites, Larsson was two hundred pages into the fourth book that is unfortunately unpublished and is currently controlled by his long time partner, Eva. There is speculation that his death was not a natural one.
