You may be wondering what the economy has to do with your social life. According to a recent poll by Paypal, the impact may be bigger than you think.
Research commissioned by the online payment platform found that 50% of respondents go out less to save money. Another 20% have stopped going out on dates and turned down invitations to weddings and birthdays.
Overall, 61% say the current economy hurts their mental well-being. For young adults, that figure is even higher at 74%.
Social support is even more important during challenging times. Try these strategies to stay healthy and connected without spending much money.
Suggestions For Socializing On A Budget
Inflation and a looming recession can cast a shadow over your entertainment plans. You still have plenty of low-cost options for having fun and building strong relationships.
1. Dine in.
Restaurant meals are expensive and usually contain added sugar, salt, and unhealthy fats. Enjoy family dinners at home, or invite your friends over.
2. Organize potlucks.
When throwing bigger parties, ask your guests to bring a dish. Create a theme to make it more festive.
3. Meet for coffee.
Introduce yourself to potential partners, and chat with old friends over coffee. If you’re hungry, breakfast and brunch menus are less expensive than lunch and dinner.
4. Attend free events.
Check your community calendar for concerts, lectures, and other events that charge no admission. Sign up to receive notices from your local libraries and museums.
5. Appreciate nature.
Go camping and hiking. Ride your bike, and play golf or tennis at free public venues. Visit local parks and picnic in your backyard.
6. Plan a staycation.
Take a break without leaving home. Explore the activities that tourists do in your town. Take your family to cultural attractions and historic sites. Go on a walking tour with your friends.
7. Volunteer together.
Serving others can help you bond with your loved ones. Sign up for a weekly shift at an animal shelter or children’s hospital.
Other Wellness Suggestions
The Paypal study had some positive news, as 34% of respondents said they are looking at more affordable ways to stay well.
Look at some simple and practical ideas for maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
1. Design a home gym.
Carve out an area just for fitness in your basement or a corner of your living room. Buy inexpensive gear like resistance bands and a yoga mat.
2. Eat more plants.
Cut your grocery bills with meatless Mondays or a fully vegetarian diet. Focus on nutritious whole foods like beans, lentils, and tofu.
3. Grow produce.
For even bigger savings, start a garden. If you’re a beginner, start with easy projects like herbs, carrots, and zucchini. Some schools, nonprofits, and nurseries offer free classes.
4. Shop wisely.
Use coupons and subscriptions to save money on healthy foods, sustainable cleaning products, and other essentials. Check weekly sales, and buy store brands.
5. Drink water.
Quench your thirst with plain water instead of sweetened beverages. Tap water is just as safe as bottled water in most areas.
6. Sleep well.
An early and consistent bedtime can do more for your appearance than many fancy beauty treatments. You’ll also reduce your risk for serious health conditions and increase productivity.
7. Practice meditation.
Schedule a few minutes of deep breathing and quiet reflection each day. Increase the time gradually to enjoy more relaxation and mindful living.
Financial booms and busts come and go, but your health and wellness need ongoing attention.
Spend time with your loved ones, and care for your body and mind.
