Top 5 Skin Problems Tormenting Seniors

As you age, your skin will go through definite changes. Many of the skin problems that seniors face are a result of exposure to the sun over a lifetime. Without proper protection from the sun, skin problems are likely.

Even with protection from the sun, the aging process will result in a change in your skin.

Even people who have the most youthful skin will still find that there are a few problems that can be frustrating during the aging process.

The most common problem and one of the most obvious is wrinkles.

Wrinkles are areas were the skin has lost elasticity and creases where it folds.

The most common places to see wrinkles are around the mouth, eyes, and forehead because of facial expressions.

Gravity also takes its toll on skin that has lost its elasticity.

As gravity naturally pulls skin downward, it loses its ability to bounce back into shape.

There are many products designed to help prevent and reduce the appearance of wrinkles and some that can help reverse them.

Another common problem that tends to torment seniors is bruising easily. As you age, the skin on your body actually gets thinner.

You also lose some of the fat layer that cushions and protects your skin.

That makes it much easier to get a bruise when you bump into something.

In addition, many seniors take medications that thin the blood which also increases the chances of causing bruise.

If you’re experiencing a lot of bruising, it could also indicate a larger health problem and you should see a healthcare provider.

Dry skin can also be an annoyance as you get older. This is also a natural result of aging and exposure to the sun.

As you get older, you don’t have as many oil glands to help keep your skin soft and hydrated. Because of that, you may find that you’re applying lotion much more often.

Age spots can be another aggravation as you get older.

These spots are harmless, but they do tend to make your skin look older.

You’ll be more likely to have these in areas where your skin has been exposed to a lot of sun.

There are several remedies to help whiten age spots.

Finally, a more serious skin problem that’s common in seniors is skin cancer.

This is also a direct result of sun exposure over your lifetime.

Most skin cancer is a result of exposure that happened many years before.

Some skin cancers are benign and just need to be removed before they become a problem.

However, some lesions can become a malignant and a serious life-threatening condition.

It’s important that you have your skin examined at least once a year to prevent serious problems.
