How to Cope with Menopause Headaches

Menopause headaches are actually quite common, even though they are often not mentioned among the main symptoms of the physical changes that occur in a woman's body upon the permanent stopping of her menstrual cycle.

These headaches occur because of the drop in the estrogen levels. They are often severe. This is the reason why they are called menstrual migraines. Here are some treatment options and the things you can do to get relief.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is the main treatment for menopause headaches. With HRT, you get estrogen in the form of a pill or in the form of a patch that you stick to your skin.

As the levels of estrogen in the body are restored the symptoms will go away.

The question most women have is whether this type of therapy is effective and safe. In general, HRT can help with all of the most serious symptoms of menopause including hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness and skin problems.

Patients that are troubled by such headaches are usually happy to take the hormonal pills designed by their doctor so that they can get complete and lasting relief. It can be safely said that hormone replacement therapy is effective.

When it comes to safety, you have to be aware of the possible side effects which include monthly bleeding, spotting, dizziness and skin problems.

The formation of blood clots and liver problems are the most serious risk associated with HRT. Still, this type of therapy is considered safe as a short-term solution involving small dosages of estrogen.

Taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is the second most widely used treatment option for menopause headaches. These medications are usually used for a short period of time so that digestive problems and other side effects can be avoided.

In general, they work better in women who still have their period, but they can offer temporary and possibly long-term relief to menopausal women as well.

Ergotamine drugs, beta blockers, anticonvulsants and calcium channel blockers are also used to relieve severe menopause headaches.

These have to be prescribed by a doctor based on the individual symptoms of the patient. In general, they should provide substantial relief. These drugs are safe for healthy individuals.

Acupuncture, aromatherapy and biofeedback training are known to be effective complementary treatments. They are generally safe and can help you cope with menopause headaches more effectively.

The treatments provide for relaxation and allow you to feel more energetic while reducing the pain.
