How to Develop an Attitude of Gratitude

by Helene Malmsio

Oprah Winfrey said that one of the most important lessons she ever learned, that made her life happier and created genuine mind body spirit balance, was learning how to journal with an attitude of gratitude.

Nowadays Gratitude Journals are commonplace, but it was not always so.

Many people find it very difficult to recognize the presence of blessings in their lives. They are too preoccupied with their lack of “this and that,” and they have trouble realizing how much they have.

They complain and demand quite relentlessly. They are enveloped in hatred and envy of those who seem to have more than they do.

They are full of regret about the things that they wish they have done, but did not; and they are possessed with acquiring more and more.

There is some value with having some gratitude. If you take some time to look around at what you have instead of what you lack, you will realize that you have so much.

Once you begin to appreciate the good things you receive, you will be more pleasant, more vigorous, and more passionate about life.

“Thank you” is very powerful phrase and instead of crying to the heavens about all your gripes and disappointments, why not develop a pure attitude of gratitude?

After all, someone more powerful is responsible for what you have achieved and it is but fitting to give credit where it is due.

Gain a different perspective. If you have gotten used to seeing things a certain way, then step back and try to see things from a different perspective.

The ploughing field will look differently, if you are looking at it from the ground, and if you are seeing from an elevated position, in an aircraft or above a mountain.

Learn how to see things a certain way. If you focus on the negative, it will be highlighted with much intensity. If you focus on other things, then it will be a different case.

Count all your blessings. It is quite easy to lose track of what you have, so take time to count your blessings and write them down.

List all the things that you have acquired. It may be material things, achievements, emotional and mental triumphs. Look at your life and see what you have that is worth being thankful for, and list them.

Most people find it difficult to see the good in life because they dwell too much on what they lack and still want. Be grateful and recognize what you have.

Do not forget to say thank you. Be it a small thing and a simple gesture, or something that brings an inordinate amount of pleasure and satisfaction, you have to learn two simple words: Thank you.

Give thanks to the person who extends even the simplest kind of assistance to you. Give thanks to those who have gotten out of their way to give you something you require.

Give thanks to the higher power that helps you go through all of life’s hardships and struggles. Do not tire of giving credit where it is due.

Document your graciousness. To be able to keep track of all the things you ought to be grateful for, there are certain ways you can do that will help document all these things.

You can start a gratitude journal that will record all the blessings that you have acquired in your lifetime. You can also have a gratitude rock that will serve as a token to remind you of all the “thank you” that you have to say.

You can also have a string of gratitude beads. Each bead will stand for something that you ought to be grateful for, so that you will not forget it.

I used to spend that time browsing online fashion and beauty magazine which just means that I spend more. Now I have replaced that habit with coming here.

In future I will think about contributing articles as well. Thank you! Thank you!! Thank you!!! and God bless"
