How To Increase The Visibility Of Your Facebook Page With Edgerank


As Facebook has exploded in popularity, and now appears to be standing toe to toe with Google in a traffic showdown, it has had to create its own Algorithm in order to determine where each users posts appear on a users newsfeed.

This algorithm is known as “edgerank”, and the three most important components that comprise edgerank are:

• Affinity

This looks at how close the relationship is between the poster and the reader, and clearly the closer the relationship the more weight the post is given.

It does mean that the more you interact with all your Facebook friends, the more likely that YOUR stories (posts/updates etc) will appear on their newsfeeds.

• Weight

Different sorts of posts carry different weightings in Facebook.

Photo’s and videos carry the greatest gravity, followed by links and then text.

Weight is also assigned to user interaction.

This means that a text post greeted with multiple likes and comments will have a greater weighting than a lavish video or photo post that has drawn no comments.

Another way to get greater Facebook weighting is to use new Facebook features, since Facebook is always keen on getting people to try their new functions.

• Time Decay

With time, a post loses weighting and value. Posting regularly will enable you to be on the forefront of your viewer’s feeds more often than not.

Understanding edgerank is critical if you’re on Facebook to drum up brand recognition and business.

Why? You only need to consider the fact that a whopping 96% of people do not return to a business Facebook page after becoming a fan.

It means that after you get them onto your friends list, your most likely chance of visibility after than point comes from appearing on their newsfeed.

Understanding edgerank really improves your chances of doing this.

In fact, the official stats back up the importance of the Facebook newsfeed – 27% of time spent by the average Facebook user is spent wading through the newsfeed.

Still not convinced? Well, in the USA, more time is spent on the Facebook newsfeed than some of the most popular traditional feeds including CNN, ABC and Yahoo!

Improving your edgerank should now be easy with the above information, but here are some additional helpful tips to maximise your chances of making it onto your friend’s feeds more often than not:

• Multimedia

Yes, photos but beyond this create photo albums. Research has shown that for some reason, photos receive maximum user engagement and interaction compared to any other type of post.

People also enjoy funny or soulful photos (i.e. captions or sensational photography) and using this type of picture can really help improve visibility for you.

• Use Post Targeting

This is a feature that allows you to send posts to those users who have a certain criteria.

This could be a mix of their age, location, relationship status, gender and more.

So for example, if you have a product or information on a hot new dating site for seniors, you could quite easily target singles above the age of 50.

The more you understand how Facebook prioritises newsfeeds, and how to maximise your edgerank, the more free publicity you will garner from it.

The great thing is that, for now at least, it’s far simpler to do than Google SEO.
