Menopause and Using Natural Remedies that Work

As you get into your 40's it is essential to learn how to cope with menopause and its symptoms.

I started experiencing the sweat flops (I think that's what they call it) in my early to mid 40's when I would suddenly break into a sweat that felt like a total meltdown to me.

And in my sleep I would wake up almost swimming in the bed, suffocating from a heatwave.

I wasn't sure what was going on, and it took a while before I started to work out that this might be the beginning of menopause - or pre-menopause.

While my menstrual cycles were still normal, I believe that the other symptoms preceded the eventual changes of those cycles.

It actually took 10 years before the menstrual cycles totally stopped, and only now am I officially menopausal.

I wish I had known a bit more about the process, but it's not something that is usually talked about much, so women tend to have to learn about how to manage menopause and how to get some menopause relief on their own.

As one of the fortunate women who already uses very natural and herbal and home remedy therapies for everything in my life, I think that the remedies I applied have keep the process very smooth for me so far.

But even though menopause is a naturally occurring life change, the symptoms can adversely affect your life and overall wellbeing.

It is important for you to get relief, and now you can do this naturally using plant and herbal remedies and natural supplements.

Flaxseed
is one of the most popular remedies for menopause symptoms.

It contains plant estrogens that, to a great extent, mimic the effect of estrogen produced naturally by the female body.

Several studies have shown that flaxseed works to lessen the number and severity of hot flashes experienced by women undergoing menopausal changes.

The plant contains omega fatty acids which have a positive effect on the mood and can protect you from depression and mood swings.

These are also effective for reducing cholesterol and consequently for lowering the risk of heart disease.

Flaxseed supplements and flaxseed oil are known to be safe for healthy individuals to use.

Soy is another one of the natural remedies relieving menopause symptoms.

It is known to mimic the effect estrogen has on the body.

It can help you with hot flashes, depression, insomnia, vaginal dryness and incontinence.

Women undergoing menopausal changes can eat soy beans, products made from them or both.

It is not yet clear how soy works to provide relief from the common symptoms of menopause.

A recent study has shown that the chemical compounds in the plant stimulate the production of an estrogen hormone in the female body called equol.

It is known that some women produce this hormone when they have natural stimulation, but others do not.

You do need to be aware though, that too much of the unfermented soy products like soy milk, soy meat substitutes and so on can actually trigger Thyroid problems in some women.

I have had Thyroid problems for years now, that I believe were partially triggered by the sheer volume of soy based products I drank and ate every day when I became a vegetarian.

So do learn about soy, and stick to the fermented products where possible.

Therefore it is possible that soy will work on some menopausal women, but not others.

Black cohosh and St. John's Wort are the herbs which are known to provide effective relief from menopause symptoms.

Black cohosh has similar effects to estrogen and helps to reduce hot flashes.

St. John's Wort acts as an antidepressant.

It is effective for depression, mood swings and anxiety associated with the cessation of the menstrual period.

Red clover
is also recommended for coping with menopause symptoms and hot flashes in particular.

There is limited research on the effectiveness of this plant, but many women claim they have had good results with it.

You also may consider using it.

Vitamin E and Vitamin D are other natural remedies that you can use during menopause.

The former works for hot flashes and may help with skin problems, while Vitamin D is effective against depression and mood swings.

This is something helpful for me as I tend to have mood swings and have developed a very short fuse in recent years, and can definitely swing into a downward spiral of depression faster than ever nowadays.
