Out of Office: How to Enjoy Work-Life Balance

Let’s be honest: work is busy, hard, and on occasion, can feel as though it is taking over our entire lives.

If you are starting to feel your work/life balance tip in the wrong direction, read on for everything you need to know to restore harmony in all areas of your daily life.

Why Does A Good Work/Life Balance Matter?

Even if you love your job, there will inevitably be times when you want to take a step back and do something for yourself - and this is important for your mental health and well-being.

Failing to build a good work/life balance leads to an increase in stress, anxiety, and depression and could even have a negative impact on your mental health.

Building a good work/life balance is important, but learning how to maintain these boundaries is crucial to long-term health and well-being. A few top options to keep that all-important balance include:

Set Specific Goals and Priorities

This can be easier said than done, but setting clear, achievable goals is perfect for helping you to manage your workload more effectively and allows you to implement specific time management strategies to keep you on course.

Start by paying closer attention to the times at work when you feel most productive - is it in the morning or the evening?

After lunch or first thing? When you find your “productive period,” block this time off in your calendar for doing your most important activities.

Then, allocate less important tasks such as email answering or updating spreadsheets to times when you tend to “slump.”

Not only will this optimize your working time to be most productive, it also increases the chances you will get a good chunk of work done, reducing the odds of it spilling over into your out-of-work time.

Love Your Job

You may think, “if only it were that easy,” but this should be your priority. If you really hate what you do, then this attitude will bleed into every aspect of your life, leaving you in a low mood.

If you have a reason to get out of bed daily, you will find it easier to leave your work at the door.

Put Your Health First

This is one element that really cannot be overestimated. You must prioritize your physical, mental, and emotional health above everything else.

If this means taking a day off when you are sick, leaving early to attend a workout class, or taking a personal day to deal with mental health, then so be it.

Putting your health first ensures you give your body, mind, and spirit the best chance to recover.

Set Boundaries

This one can be controversial, but it is important to help you avoid burnout and retain a good work/life balance. When you are out of the office, be out of the office.

Ideally, have a separate email, phone, and laptop for work and home.

You also need to be firm about your work hours. If you are on vacation, clarify that you will not be answering work queries, and inform your manager that you will not take work calls in personal time.

This may seem intimidating, but it will ensure that you are ready to do your best at work.

Maintaining a work/life balance can be challenging, but by making just a few changes, you can enjoy a whole new way of enjoying both work and personal life.

Three Ways To Enjoy Success At Work

For many of us, our career is one of the most important elements of our lives, and doing well is a key aspiration.

We want to be successful at work, but what does that mean?

Success at work means different things to different people. Some people are more concerned with making money, while others are interested in being promoted or having a high-profile role.

Still others may just enjoy their job for its own sake, and be keen to learn all they can.

We have five easy ways to boost your success in the workplace, and enjoy the perks that come with it.

Do What You Love

If you love what you do, you'll always be motivated to get up every morning and go to work.

It doesn't matter whether you're working in an office or on a farm - if you're passionate about what you do, it will show. This passion will help you perform better, and ensure you're giving 100%.

Take some time to sit back, reflect, and make sure you are in a job or role that fulfills and satisfies you.

If you fail to find any good points about your job, it may be time to look elsewhere.

Be Positive

Being positive is a great way to improve your mood and outlook on life. When you feel happy and content, you tend to be more productive and focused, which makes you a much more effective worker.

When you start feeling down, try to think positively. Remind yourself why you chose to pursue your particular career path, and remember all the reasons why you like your job.

Try not to dwell on negative thoughts, as these will only serve to drag you down. Instead, focus on the positives and use them to motivate yourself.

Make a list of all the things you love about your role and pin it somewhere you will see it every day - this is a great way to motivate yourself.

Make The Most Of Training Opportunities

Another way to increase your success at work is to make the most of every training opportunity that comes your way.

This will help you cement your position as a reliable professional who is keen to progress.

Make a point of asking your boss for any chances to train or take on extra responsibilities that will allow you to develop your skills further.

This could include taking on additional duties or even moving into another department altogether.

You never know when you might need to prove yourself, so don't miss out on opportunities to learn new skills.

Set Goals And Keep Them In Mind

Setting goals is one of the best ways to stay motivated and focused at work. By setting clear objectives, you can easily measure your performance against those targets.

This will also help you plan ahead, and set you up for success by making sure you have a clear plan to progress.

Stay Organized

Staying organized is vital if you want to succeed in the long term. Without a well-organized workspace, you won't be able to work efficiently and you'll end up wasting valuable time searching for files and documents.

Keep your desk tidy and free from clutter, and make sure everything has a place.

Success at work isn't just about being successful in your current role. It's about how you approach your career overall, and how you manage your personal development.
