Some Simple Home Remedies For Man's Best Friend

Murphy's Law states that accidents will always happen at the most inopportune time, or at least after the vet's normal business hours. For some cheaper ideas and home remedies, the following suggestions may help.

Minor Cuts, Burns And Scrapes

Rinse the affected area with warm water and a small amount of hydrogen peroxide. Bag Balm is a great product to have on hand for animals as well as people.

Not only does it protect the area, it's also a great antiseptic.

It can be used for dry skin, cuts, burns, dry skin and even areas affected by mange after it has been treated.

Bag Balm comes in a green tin and can be found at most pharmacies.

Veterinarians also carry it, but it can be a little bit more expensive and comes in a plastic tub.

If Bag Balm is not readily available in your area, Neosporin or triple antibiotic ointment can also be used.

Diarrhea and Vomiting

The main concern during bouts of diarrhea and vomiting is that your pet can dehydrate quickly.

Unflavored Pedialyte can be found at almost any store and can be given to you pet in unlimited quantities.

Sometimes your dog must be force fed the solution with a medicine syringe, but it's necessary to keep him hydrated until you can seek medical attention.

The best way to check for dehydration is to grab your dog by the scruff of the neck while he's relaxed.

If it springs back immediately, he is fine, if the wrinkle stays in place, then he is dehydrated.

You can also check his gums, white gums mean very severe dehydration.

The best diet to give any dog with an upset stomach is chicken and rice.

Throw everything in a pot with a little salt and boil it until soft.

Dog food, even canned, can irritate the stomach more and cause more problems. There's also an activated charcoal syrup you can buy at any vet's office that's nice to have on hand.

Dandruff (And Possibly Fleas)

Some dogs, just like people, have chronic dandruff. Dogs aren't meant to take regular baths: if you bathe them too often, you could actually be causing the dandruff.

To make a simple dog shampoo add 1 teaspoon of gentle dish soap and 1 cup of apple cider vinegar to an empty 1 liter bottle and fill the rest up with water.

Shake the bottle to mix and completely soak your dog, making sure to clean his belly and ear areas, where they can't always clean easily themselves. Rinse with warm water and towel dry your dog.

This shampoo is supposed to be a flea repellent, but the best bet is to also add a 3 month flea and tick repellent oil to his coat to be sure.
