If you want your career to be rewarding both in money and in satisfaction you need to take responsibility for designing your own vision of professional success!

Otherwise, you’ll spend your days trying to live up to the expectations of others or mindlessly drifting from one job to the next, without any joy.

Of course, success itself means different things to different people. For some, it’s a matter of earning more money and climbing the corporate ladder.

For others, it’s more about stretching their skills and contributing to society.

What do you want? What do you plan to learn about to increase your skills base and value to the marketplace?

Use this checklist to plan your future and put your plans into action.

Planning for Career Success:

1. Identify your strengths.

Think about your talents and how you can apply them. Do you like working with numbers or do you have a passion for design?

Browse online for aptitude tests that will suggest careers that suit your personality.

2. Set specific goals.

Create objectives that will motivate you and allow you to evaluate your progress.

Give yourself realistic short- and long-term targets that are challenging but feasible.

3. Address obstacles.

You may find that you need some additional resources to complete your goals. Figure out what’s holding you back and how you’ll overcome it.

4. Consider your brand.

What makes you unique? Understanding your personal brand will help you to market yourself.

You’ll know what you stand for and the audience that you’re trying to reach.

5. Think ahead.

Career planning is an ongoing process that requires more than keeping your resume updated.

Review your job status regularly to decide if it’s time to make a change.

6. Write it down.

Put your career plan down on paper. You’ll be more likely to keep your strategy in mind instead of letting it get buried under daily events.

Implementing Your Career Plan:

1. Manage your time.

Block out space in your calendar for activities essential to your goals.

You may need to cut down on distractions like watching TV or shopping online.

2. Maximize your network.

Build a strong network where you can share practical and moral support.

Ask others for help when you need it. Be generous with sharing information and referrals.

3. Learn from others.

Benefit from the experience of others. Find a mentor or shadow a star employee at your company.

4. Build your qualifications.

Seek opportunities for education and training.

Take certification courses online and check out the adult education catalog at your nearest community college.

5. Increase your visibility.

Promote yourself by volunteering for committees at the local chapter of your professional association.

Write articles for your company website or publish your own industry blog.

6. Negotiate compensation.

Research current salary data when you’re exploring a new line of work or expecting a job offer.

Talk with your employer about fringe benefits that are important to you, such as childcare or flexible hours.

7. Take risks.

If you want to excel at work, you’ll need to move beyond your comfort zone. Focus on gradual growth you can sustain, and the small victories will add up.

Deliver a presentation at a staff meeting to prepare for addressing the crowd at your annual convention.

8. Stay positive.

Your professional career may last 50 years or more, so a cheerful attitude will help you to persevere.

Look on the bright side of difficult situations and learn how to laugh at yourself.

Create a career that enables you to do what you love and achieve balance in your personal and professional life.

What is Your ONE Thing?

In all likelihood, you’re trying to be good at too many things. Trimming down your list of priorities can make you more effective.

Focus your attention on the tasks that bring the most results.

What is the one thing that will move the needle in your career, relationship, or health? Have you even thought about it?

The one thing that matters is often challenging or unenjoyable, but you might have more free time if you did that one thing instead of the three other things you’ve been doing instead.

Focus on your one thing:

1. Everyone has 24 hours each day.

Everyone has 24 hours, but how you spend them is up to you. Some people manage to build huge companies with their 24 hours. Others struggle to pay the rent.

Some people create great health and happiness with their 24 hours. Others are out of shape and miserable. How do you spend your 24 hours each day?

2. Focus on what you should do, not what you could do.

Most of us that have a daily list of tasks have both on our list.

It’s important to figure out the things that are so important and impactful that they must be accomplished today.

All the rest move down to the bottom of the list.

3. Prioritize until you’re down to just one task.

Prioritize even further. What is the number one thing you need to do today that will make the biggest difference?

When you complete that task, what is the next most important thing. Keep going until you run out of time.

4. Have one thing you’re known for.

What are you known for? Playing the piano? Installing windows? Your intelligence? Figure out your one thing and ensure the world knows about it.

5. Eliminate distractions.

Distractions get in the way of focusing on your one thing. Be relentless in eliminating distractions.

6. Apply this process to all areas of your life.

◦ What is the one thing you can do for the next month to most improve your health?

There’s one thing you can do in your current situation to improve your health the most.

It will probably help more than the next five things on your list combined.

◦ What is the one thing you can do each day to improve your relationship with your partner? Think about your partner and your relationship. What would bring the most benefit?

What is the one thing you can practice on the piano to improve your playing the most over the next week? Or your golf swing. Or your reading speed?

What is the one thing you can consistently do at work to increase your value as an employee? What can you do that would help your company and career the most?

What is the one thing for you? What is the one thing for each area of your life that will make the biggest difference? What is the one thing you need to do today? This week?

Find your one thing, as little else matters.

How to Create a 5-Year Plan for Your Life & Career

Did you plan out the last five years of your life? Most people don’t plan ahead that far. We often don’t even plan out the next day.

Imagine how much you could accomplish over the next five years if you made a reasonable plan and stuck to it.

Without a plan your life is unlikely to change much. You put yourself at the mercy of luck.

Consider these aspects of your life:

1. Finances.


Think about where you want to be financially. Consider income, net worth, debt, savings, and investments.

Are there new income streams you want to create? What are your future plans for spending? Do you want to purchase a house? A boat? An investment property?

2. Health.

What are your current health challenges? How much do you want to weigh?

What type of diet do you want to follow? How fit do you want to be?

3. Career.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Where do you want to be working? What do you want to be doing? Do you need to go back to school? What is your dream job?

4. Relationships.

Are there any relationships you’d like to create or dissolve? Do you want to have children or more children?

5. Personal Development.

Do you want to learn to speak Spanish or to play the piano? Would you like to learn how to dance? What would you like to learn or to become?

What skills do you need to acquire to make the most of the next five years?

6. Adventure.

What would you like to do? Climb a mountain? Go skydiving? See a volcano?

What adventures would you like to experience over the next five years?

Write down what you want for each of these six areas of your life.

Once you've completed that, begin the process of making a plan for the future.

It’s not enough to know where you’re going. You must plan your path, too.

These strategies will help you to create a plan and execute it:

1. Set goals.

Create a few goals for each area of your life and set deadlines for each goal. Avoid just having long-term goals.

It’s important to have shorter-term goals that lead up to your bigger goals.

It’s hard to maintain focus on goals that require more than 10 weeks to reach. Break your goals down into smaller chunks.

2. Write a plan.

You know what you want to accomplish. You have goals. Create a detailed plan about what you want to accomplish over 10-week segments of time.

Just start at the end and keep working back to the present day. Make beginning simple enough that you could literally start doing something today.

3. Create habits.

Goals are easy to achieve if you can create the right habits.

The challenge is figuring out the right habits and then implementing them. With effective habits, success is a cinch.

There’s a lot of material available on how to create habits. Educate yourself. It’s an incredibly valuable skill to have.

Choose a direction for your life by choosing a destination. Most people fail to plan their lives in any meaningful way.

We often keep our focus too short to ever create anything substantial in the future.

A 5-year goal is a good step towards making impressive changes in your life.
