What Are Limiting Beliefs and How Do They Impact Your Life?
As the name suggests, limiting beliefs are personal beliefs or conceptions that prevent us from doing certain things. This could be something simple and common such as not thinking you have time for certain things during the day, or it could be something more drastic such as an irrational fear of cats or not wanting to use a certain color.
What are some of the most common limiting beliefs?
As much as we try to make ourselves believe we are free spirits, each of us has beliefs which we cannot seem to overcome. Most of the time, these beliefs come from our childhood and the way we were brought up.
Some children grew up in homes where their parents didn't inspire confidence in them, or perhaps they put them down in an attempt to make them try harder, either at school or at home.
I can't change who I am.
This belief limits us in terms of changing and progressing with our own personal lives.
While aspects of your personality won't change, there are many things that you can change about yourself, and the first step is believing that you don't have to be stuck in the same old ways for the rest of your life.
I'm not motivated enough.
Whether it's finding a job, studying for a degree or going out each morning for a run, many of us believe that we're just not motivated enough and we can't change that.
Not many people are naturally full of motivation and commitment, so it's something you need to train over a period of time.
Changing your mindset can be done with a little bit of willpower – make a list of reasons why you should do a certain thing.
How do they impact your life?
Limiting beliefs come from a variety of sources, including our childhood, our friends and peers, the media (particularly social media) and the books we choose to read.
Many of us are not aware of our limiting beliefs, and these beliefs have become so normal that the thought of getting rid of them doesn't even occur to us.
Limiting beliefs, regardless of what exactly they are for each individual, hold us back from doing the things we would like to do.
For example, being afraid of public speaking could mean that you don't choose a certain study programme since a percentage of assessments require presentations and speaking to a group of people.
How can you change your limiting beliefs?
Becoming aware of what your limiting beliefs are is the first step to getting them out of your mind and your life. Make a list of all the things you believe are limiting you from living to your full potential and you will become more conscious of them each day.
