Reclaiming My Personal Power in 2014 - Session 6
by Helene Malmsio
(Maryborough, Vic - for the time being)
Using Empowering Q&A today! ... No more endless-loop limiting questions for this little black duck!
I've got to say, this is one of my favourite session days, because it is all about how to mentally change your state to improve the way you feel and the way you think about life and where you are going.
We are constantly asking ourselves questions (hundreds of them!) every day in our self-talk.
The one I remember best is the one discussed in Pathways to Excellence by Lou Tice... which is the most common form of auto-pilot question we constantly ask ourselves and have to answer and deal with in our daily lives eg: "Have I been here before? What happened?" as that is SUCH a minefield because if you have "been here before" and the outcome was NOT good, you will automatically be doing backflips trying to get yourself the heck out of there.
But if it is something like say: crossing the street. You say, "Sure, been here, done this, safely crossed the road, didn't get hit by a car. So, I'm happy to cross THIS road, and I'm feeling confident I will be safe."
If you have ever been bitten by a dog, and your friend brings around their dog when they visit you, what do you think your question and answer would be... and what your resultant reaction would be?
You don't realize you are asking yourself this format of question all day long... You meet a cute person... and ask yourself "Have I been here? Yep, got my heart broken!" then you won't be rushing into your next date, no matter how cute that person is.
Anyway, Tony cover this subject by looking at how choosing to ask POSITIVE questions... taking control of the kinds of questions you ask yourself in the first place can totally change your outlook in your every day.
Not just knowing what your constant inner chatter is saying in your mind all day, but actually choosing to start each day from the very beginning by asking yourself the kinds of questions that will make you feel great about yourself, and optimistic about the day ahead, and remind you of all the things that make you feel grateful.
It is a big session, but sooooo worth doing it, so get stuck into it and create your own sets of positive questions to ask yourself every morning and through the day when you need to fly straight.
I'll post here what I wrote about this on one of my earliest websites where I covered some of this:
You might look at the following strategy and think "Oh No! Not more of this simplistic - quick fix - nonsense".
Please don't discard this powerful concept just because it is so SIMPLE. Simple doesn't always mean EASY.
You have to apply yourself - consistently - with a genuine desire to improve your emotional wellbeing, THEN you will get powerful results.
Go on - Try this straightforward self help exercise – answer the questions and notice how you feel when you think about the answers……
“What am I most enjoying in my life right now?”
(as Tony says, don’t say “nothing!” Instead ask yourself “If I could be enjoying something in my life right now, what would that be?”)
Then ask yourself:
“What about that do I enjoy?”
Then ask yourself:
“How does that make me feel?”
Then next ask yourself:
“What am I most happy about in my life right now?”
Then ask yourself:
“What about that makes me feel happy?”
Notice how your emotions react to the experience of dwelling or thinking about the good and sweet things in your life.
If you like the feeling and want more of it, just keep asking yourself the right questions.
Any self help tool, no matter how powerful, only works when you work it.
When you start each day asking yourself questions that generate a feeling of pleasure, excitement, enthusiasm, just by the act of answering them, your day gets off on the right path.
Try designing self help questions that suit your life or interests, maybe straightforward ones like:
What am I excited about in my life now?
What am I grateful about in my life now?
What am I most looking forward to in my life today?
You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to apply this self help strategy, do you?
Got a job ahead of you that you are not looking forward to?
Then see if you can come up with a creative solution to that reluctance by asking yourself "How can I get this task done and ENJOY the process?"
You might just surprise yourself with an answer, and make the chore much more pleasant to do!!!
All you need is the DESIRE to improve your day and then make the commitment to actually APPLY it every morning for at least 30 days. It will work.
Really. It is that scary simple to take control of your attitude from the minute you wake up every day... the rest is up to you - lol!
