Have you been trying – unsuccessfully – to manage your fears and phobias?
Many of us have fears which can be big or small. Sometimes, people develop irrational fears or phobias that they cannot control.
People may have a fear of flying, enclosed spaces, crowds, spiders, or speaking in public. These fears or phobias can limit or even cripple their every day life.
There are many ways to conquer your fears and overcome your phobias.
Traditionally, people are exposed to their phobia or the thing they are afraid of in order to decondition them to the fear.
However, this technique can be uncomfortable and may even prove detrimental when not done the right way.
One technique that is rapidly gaining immense popularity is called EFT or Emotional Freedom Techniques.
Although there is no scientific explanation for this method, thousands of success stories attest to the effectiveness of EFT.
Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT is a type of energy therapy. It brings healing by balancing the body's energy system.
Emotional Freedom Techniques or EFT is based on the principle that illnesses and psychological disorders are caused by a disturbance in the body's life energy.
Tapping on the acupuncture points restores balance and allows the body to heal itself.
Tapping on specific points can also relieve stress and the emotional ties binding you to the undesirable habit.
EFT works on the same principle as acupuncture, wherein patients are treated by manipulating their energy flow or “chi” using needles in their meridians or acupuncture points.
Your fear, phobia, pain, or disease may be caused by an imbalance or disruption in your chi.
EFT uses tapping techniques to restore balance within the body.
By tapping on the acupuncture or acupressure points, you can eliminate negative emotions like fear, anxiety, stress and phobia very quickly.
Meridian Tapping Techniques or MTT involves tapping on the acupressure points of the body.
It uses a variety of techniques, hence the official name is in the plural form.
Tapping therapy is a non-invasive, alternative healing method that you can perform on your own.
The sequential tapping procedure addresses the causes of your physical pain or psychological challenges, balancing the body's energy and eliminating negative emotions.
You can use two fingers (index and middle) or all four fingers to tap on specific meridian points.
Many Meridian Tapping Techniques also require you to say certain phrases that can help you focus on your problem or ailment so that you can get the most benefit from the therapy.
Meridian Tapping is based on the same principles as acupressure and acupuncture.
Practitioners of these ancient, alternative methods of healing believe that negative emotions can disrupt the flow of energy in the body leading to chronic pain, migraines, stress, insomnia, panic attacks, fears and phobias.
By tapping on acupressure points with your finger, you can release negative energy and stimulate the smooth flow of your chi or energy.
MTT offers the same beneficial results as the needles used in acupuncture
Meridian tapping as a healing method was discovered by accident by Dr. Roger Callahan, who was treating a patient with a phobia of water.
At the time, the patient was also experiencing stomach pain.
Knowing that there is an acupressure point on the cheekbone for the stomach, Dr. Callahan instructed her to tap her cheekbone in order to relieve her stomach pains.
Amazingly, her phobia of water also disappeared!
Extreme fears and phobias are rooted in an imbalance in your body energy.
EFT using meridian tapping can correct this imbalance or disruption.
First, identify the fear or phobia that you want to overcome.
Compose a statement acknowledging your fear followed by a positive affirmation of yourself as a person such as “Even though I'm terrified of heights, I deeply and completely accept myself anyway.”
Repeat the statement 3 times while tapping 7-10 times on the Karate Chop point located on the side of the small finger of your hand.
Next, perform a round of tapping on the meridian points beginning with the top or crown of your head and moving on to the eyebrow, side of the eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, underarm, and back to the head.
Tap each point 7 to 10 times while repeating your phobia such as “my fear of heights” or “my fear of public speaking.”
After one or two rounds assess how you feel.
Ideally, your negative emotions will have dissipated or disappeared.
Sometimes you may trigger a secondary issue.
Repeat the therapy until you have completely tamed your fears.
People often develop bad habits because they are stressed, bored, or want instant gratification.
You may avoid vacuuming or doing the dishes because you'd rather watch TV.
Nail biting and cracking the knuckles can be signs of stress or nervousness.
Many of these poor habits can be eliminated by tapping.
Tapping on specific meridian points removes stress and releases negative emotions.
Although it will not happen overnight, you'll start to feel better and eventually free yourself from bad habits.
If you have a number of bad habits, you can start working on one of them first.
Perhaps you want to break your habit of biting your nails, smoking, slouching, or running late.
Pick one of your bad habits, such as nail biting, and start tapping to get rid of it.
The great thing about tapping is that there's nothing complicated about it and you can do it on your own.
Simply focus your thoughts on the habits you want to change and start tapping.
You can easily learn about what points to tap and where to start and end. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain with Emotional Freedom Techniques tapping.
How to Tackle Bad Habits with Tapping
If you want to break bad personal habits with tapping, the first thing to do is tap while acknowledging your bad habit.
Next, tap to get rid of the habit itself. Keep in mind that you have to be patient and honest with yourself. Do not expect to get overnight results.
Many people say you don't have to follow a specific sequence of tapping points. However, you may want to follow a particular routine.
EFT tapping always start with the Setup, wherein you acknowledge your bad habit, ailment, or emotional problem.
Tap on the Karate Chop Point 5-10 times while saying, “Even though I [state your bad habit], I intensely and wholly accept myself.”
Next, start a round of tapping through the following meridian points – the eyebrow, under eye, side of the eye, under the chin, under the nose, under arm, collarbone, and top of the head.
Use two fingers of your hands to tap 5 to 10 times.
While tapping, you can say words to acknowledge your bad habits, such as:
* I often bite my nails when I'm nervous
* Sometimes I bite my nails
* I seldom bite my nails now
* I choose not to bite my nails
* Even though I bite my nails, I completely love and accept myself anyway
* I don't bite my nails now
You can make up the phrases you want to say as you go along. The important thing is to stay focused on the issue rather than on the words.
Before long, you'll see an improvement in your behavior and your bad habit will be a thing of the past.
Strange as it may sound, the EFT method is not only effective in the short term but it can also help you maintain your ideal weight for life.
EFT involves tapping on specific acupressure points on the body to release energy or emotional blockages that are preventing you from losing extra weight and keeping it off.
It's only when these blockages are eliminated that your conscious and unconscious mind will be ready to work together to achieve and maintain a healthy weight.
Why Most Diets Do Not Succeed
More than two out of three adults in America are overweight and many of these people will tell you that diets seldom work.
The theory behind dieting is very simple: consume fewer calories than you burn per day.
Traditional diets restrict the quantity and/or the types of food you can eat.
Although dieting may seem simple, many diets do not address the causes of overweight problems. Because of this, diets often fail to provide permanent weight loss.
In general, people with overweight problems eat to satisfy their emotional needs. Some people turn to food when they are stressed, bored or lonely. Others eat to give themselves a treat.
Most diets treat the symptoms (eating too much) and not the cause (emotional needs). In order for a weight loss program to succeed, it must teach lifestyle changes needed for long-term success.
It must also treat the weight problem holistically, addressing the emotional, mental and spiritual needs of the person. This is exactly how EFT can help with natural and permanent weight loss.
EFT As An Alternative To Diet
Emotional Freedom Techniques can be combined with a natural weight loss program to achieve and maintain a healthy weight with ease.
This combination addresses a person's needs at all levels – physical, emotional, mental and spiritual.
EFT tapping gets rid of negative emotions blocking your road to success.
These negative emotions can come in the form of stress, frustration, anger, and fear.
By tapping on specific points in the body, you'll get quick relief from your negative feelings.
It becomes possible for you to eat for physical sustenance, not to appease your emotions and mind. EFT offers a holistic solution to your weight problems.
How EFT Can Help With Weight Loss
EFT offers a holistic treatment for weight loss by treating the whole self. People often overeat because they feel empty emotionally or spiritually.
Tapping deals with the negative emotions and helps with emotional, spiritual and physical healing. This lays the groundwork for natural weight loss.
By healing the mind, spirit and emotions, EFT helps eliminate food cravings.
Tapping opens up the conscious and unconscious mind and allows them to work together not against each other.
Traditional diets require a lot of willpower with the conscious mind working hard to overcome the impulses from the unconscious mind.
In contrast, EFT makes it possible for the conscious and unconscious mind to work together, not only for weight loss but also to reach other goals.
Statistics show that the vast majority of people who follow a traditional weight management program fail to maintain their ideal weight in the long term. Frustration and disappointment set in which often leads to weight gain.
EFT offers a holistic weight loss formula that can help you shed extra pounds painlessly. You'll find it easier to eat a healthy and sensible diet. With EFT, natural weight loss is nothing short of miraculous.
Traumatic experiences can cause a drastic disturbance in a person's energy system, leading to long-term psychological, physical, and emotional consequences if left untreated.
Post traumatic stress disorder can develop in someone who has experienced a traumatic event such as war, natural disaster, rape, kidnapping, physical abuse, torture, or serious accident, and those who have witnessed death or acts of violence towards others.
The energy disturbance results in a variety of physical and psychological symptoms accompanied by uncontrollable emotions.
Some of the symptoms of PTSD include flashbacks, nightmares, intrusive memories, emotional numbing, behavioral changes, insomnia, and depression.
EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) using meridian tapping eases deep-seated negative emotions by unblocking energy with the simple method of tapping two fingers on strategic points in the body.
How Does Meridian Tapping for PTSD Work?
People with PTSD such as war vets, rape victims and other victims of violence can benefit from energy healing methods such as EFT.
Tapping is a technique that anyone can easily learn and self-apply.
This healing method has been used successfully countless times to cure or manage phobias, fears, negative thoughts, and traumatic memories.
Trauma creates stress which blocks the body's energy, causing emotional and behavioral problems that can linger long after the trauma event has taken place.
The blockage can be removed by stimulating acupressure points in the body through finger tapping.
Meridian tapping is based on the ancient healing method of acupuncture used by the Chinese.
Acupuncture uses needles in certain points of the body to correct the flow and restore balance to the life energy or Chi.
Instead of using needles, tapping uses the fingers to apply pressure on specific meridian points in the body to eliminate the negative side effects of PTSD.
Meridian tapping is an effective energy healing method for the treatment of PTSD symptoms.
The technique is easy to learn and you can apply it on yourself to eliminate negative emotions and behavioral issues.
EFT involves tapping on a sequence of meridian points while focusing on the symptom that you wish to eliminate.
It takes practice to do this effectively, but even beginners can experience positive results immediately.
As you tap on each point, you should also say key words and phrases to help you focus on your specific problem.
How Effective is Tapping for PTSD?
A recent study conducted by the Foundation for Epigenetic Medicine revealed that Emotional Freedom Techniques using meridian tapping therapy is highly effective in treating post traumatic stress disorder and related psychological problems.
The study involved 59 US military veterans with PTSD.
The test subjects were split into two groups with one group receiving tapping therapy and the other group receiving standard treatment.
The result of the study showed that 90% of those who received EFT treatment no longer met the clinical criteria for PTSD.
In comparison, only 4% of those receiving standard treatment were able to overcome their psychological disorder.
The official report was published in the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease.
It confirms that EFT is an effective treatment method for post traumatic stress disorder.
Beneficial for PTSD
EFT as a treatment for PTSD has very promising results. Tapping releases negative emotions that disrupt the body's energy system and can provide instant relief.
The rounds of sequential tapping has been shown to completely discharge the intense negative emotion associated with the memory of the traumatic experience. The memories remain, but they no longer carry the negative feelings.
One advantage of EFT is that once the core issue is resolved, the problem does not come back.
Another advantage is that it is drug-free and works without exposing the patient to another traumatic or uncomfortable experience.
There are hundreds of recorded cases where EFT using meridian tapping has effectively treated war vets, firemen, paramedics, policemen, survivors of horrific accidents and natural disasters, and victims of rape and childhood abuse.
Given its track record, this new and “alternative” therapy could be the best and most effective treatment for PTSD sufferers.
EFT tapping is simple and easy to learn, but did you know that it's still possible to make mistakes?
Here are some of the common mistakes people make when tapping:
1. Not Tapping Often Enough
Tapping should be done on a daily basis. Experts recommend at least 5 minutes of tapping three or more times each day.
At the very least, do some tapping in the morning before getting out of bed, and again at night before falling asleep.
A few issues can be cleared up with a minute of tapping, but the majority will require more time and attention.
More frequent tapping can also clear bigger problems more quickly.
2. Not Tapping Long Enough
Many people stop too soon during a tapping session.
Too often, beginners tap for few rounds and give up when they feel they're not getting the results they were hoping for.
Tapping should take 10-30 minutes, or even longer.
Devoting enough time to tapping will make a lot of difference.
Some people will also stop when they begin to feel better.
Don't settle for a bit of relief; keep on tapping until the energy starts flowing and you feel really good.
3. Not Being Specific Enough
Global or general statements can help get you started in the right direction while tapping, but after that you have to be more specific.
You can setup with a statement like “Even though I feel anxious right now, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
After doing a couple of rounds of the general statement, you can go down to specifics such as “Even though I feel anxious about my upcoming job interview, I deeply and completely accept myself.”
You'll get better results when you're focused on a specific issue.
4. Wanting To Do The Tapping Perfectly Right Away
Some people want to be “perfect” and may put off tapping until they feel they are able to do it correctly.
As a result they only try the technique a few times, or not at all.
Getting started on tapping is more important than being perfect.
You can still get good results even if you think your technique is less than perfect.
Start with the basic tapping points and be sure to tap daily to develop your EFT skills.
5. Not Tuning Into The Feelings
Don't forget that tapping clears emotional energy from your body.
So, it's important to tune into your feelings and not merely “think” about them.
If your psychological difficulties these days are the result of embarrassing childhood memories, try to recall how you felt at the time.
Old feelings of shame, hurt and anger will sometimes resurface when you tap.
Try to resurrect these feelings and you will get more out of your tapping sessions.
6. Expecting All Results From Tapping To Be Permanent
You can't expect 100% positive results all the time, and this is true not only for EFT but for all healing methods as well.
Don't get frustrated or discouraged if an issue or part of it comes back.
Some people do get permanent results but in many cases you may have to do more tapping to get rid of the issue completely.
If you have a problem that keeps coming back, this could mean that other aspects or a root cause needs to be uncovered and addressed first.
7. Sticking To EFT Basics Only
In order to master EFT and reap its full benefits, you have to invest time and effort to gain skill and develop your intuition.
It's not enough to “go through the motions”.
Harness your intuition and use it to seek out the most effective tapping techniques and peel away the emotions and root causes of your problems.
